Years after Significant Settlement with Marvell, Carnegie Mellon Sues Broadcom Subsidiaries over Same Patents
Carnegie Mellon University has filed suit against Broadcom (Avago, LSI) (5:18-cv-04571) over the same two patents at the heart of a settlement that had Marvell pay Carnegie Mellon $750M. The patents generally relate to accurately reading data stored on hard disks using “ever smaller” magnetic regions; at issue are hard disk drive (HDD) read channel devices, including the defendants’ TrueStore line of HDD chips (e.g., “the RC5101 Spyder ELP PS Azure, the RC5110 Sypder ELP PS Boxster, and the RC5200 Spyder ELP PS Corvette read channels and SOCs that include those read channels”). Carnegie Mellon’s complaint appears to lay the groundwork for the same damages theory, based on “an extensive design, development, and sales cycle” of the accused products, used to secure a judgment from the Western District of Pennsylvania against Marvell for more than $1.5B.
