Recent Patent Assignments Foreshadow Litigation from Players Old and New
Patent Market, Patent Watch
Recorded patent assignments recently made public reveal patents on the move, to an NPE that appears to be collecting assets from a familiar source as prior litigated patents run into PTAB trouble; to an entity managed by what appears to be a relatively new monetization operation standing up; to a recent entrant into the litigation funding space; to entities associated with a frequent plaintiff-side law firm in Texas; and to a host of other plaintiffs recently filing suit.

Judge Stark’s Elevation Threatens to Slow IP Edge’s Roll
New Patent Litigation
IP Edge LLC plaintiff Moxchange LLC has filed two new cases in its litigation campaign targeting the support of secure Wi-Fi networking via the WPA2 protocol, suing Carestream Health (1:22-cv-00397) and Resideo Technologies (1:22-cv-00396) in the District of Delaware. The elevation of District Judge Leonard P. Stark to the Federal Circuit bench has stalled a fleet of cases there, including suits from earlier rounds of litigation filed by Moxchange, several which appear to bucking the typical IP Edge file-and-dismiss approach to litigation.

IP Edge Kicks Off Campaign Targeting Wireless Encryption
New Patent Litigation
In one of its three new litigation campaigns begun at the end of August 2020, monetization firm IP Edge LLC, through plaintiff Moxchange LLC, has sued Allied Telesis (1:20-cv-01124), China Huaxin (ALE USA) (1:20-cv-01123), Hon Hai Precision Industry (Belkin International) (1:20-cv-01125), Proxim Wireless (1:20-cv-01126), and Sonim Technologies (1:20-cv-01127). Each of the defendants, except Sonim, is targeted over support of the IEEE 802.11i encryption standard by their respective access points; Sonim is accused of infringement through the provision of its smartphones. A family of wireless communications patents, with original development work conducted at New Mexico Tech, is at issue in this new campaign.

IP Edge Initiates First New Litigation Campaign of 2020 with a Patent Curiously Sourced
New Patent Litigation
Sunset Licensing LLC has sued Azuga (5:20-cv-02174), CalAmp (4:20-cv-00267), Marelli Holding (1:20-cv-00448), Sierra Wireless (1:20-cv-00449), Skypatrol (1:20-cv-00450), Smartrak (3:20-cv-02176), and Torre Industries (MiX Telematics) (4:20-cv-01154) in various districts. Each defendant is accused of infringing a single patent, generally related to monitoring the speed of a vehicle, through the provision of devices capable of tracking vehicle speed. With recent years past as prologue, and particularly given other recent IP Edge LLC activity, this new campaign appears to be the first of many—with USPTO assignment records suggesting that some may see patents asserted from the same source.
