WiLAN and Acacia Report Declines in Q1 Revenue of over 60 Percent
Wi-LAN Inc. (WiLAN) and Acacia Research Corporation reported their Q1 2017 earnings on May 4, both revealing year-over-year declines in revenue of more than 60 percent. The quarter’s dismal results come amid efforts by WiLAN and Acacia—historically, the two publicly traded NPEs most active in patent litigation among those tracked by RPX—to diversify their activities beyond patent assertion.

Through Separate Subs, WiLAN Hits Nanya Twice in Four Months
PLL Technologies, Inc. has filed suit against Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Nanya Technology (1:16-cv-00069), asserting a single patent (6,356,122) generally related to phase-locked loop (PLL) based clock synthesizers. The complaint accuses Nanya of infringement through the manufacture and sale of certain FPGA devices. The ‘122 patent issued to Cypress Semiconductor in March 2002; PLL’s parent, Wi-LAN Inc. (WiLAN), acquired several patents from Cypress in June 2013, assigning the ‘122 patent, along with three other former Cypress patents, to PLL shortly after its creation in Delaware in early 2014.
