Abstract

Briefly, an intelligent label is associated with a good, and includes one or more permanent and irreversible electrochromic indicators that are used to report the condition of that good at selected points in the movement or usage of that good. These electrochromic indicators provide immediate visual information regarding the status of the good without need to interrogate or communicate with the electronics or processor on the intelligent label. In this way, anyone in the shipping or use chain for the good, including the end user consumer, can quickly understand whether the product is meeting shipping and quality standards. If a product fails to meet shipping or quality standards, the particular point where the product failed can be quickly and easily identified, and information can be used to assure the consumer remains safe, while providing essential information for improving the shipping process. It will be understood that the label may take many forms, such as a tag attached to the good, integrated into the packaging for the good, integrated into the good itself, or may even be an information area on a prepaid card for example. The label may also include, for example, print information regarding the good, usage or shipping rules, or address and coded information.

Claims

1. A method of quality control for a good, comprising:

providing an intelligent tag on the good, the tag comprising a processor, a memory, a sensor, a wireless communication circuit, and a power source;

receiving a signal from the wireless communication circuit, the signal indicating a location of the good;

collecting, responsive to the signal indicating a location of the good, data from the sensor;

determining, using the collected data, a characteristic or state of the good or of the good'"'"'s environment; and

generating, responsive to the characteristic, a message.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the message is sent using the wireless communication circuit to a remote receiver.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the tag further includes a display, and the message is presented on the display.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the signal from the wireless communication circuit indicates whether or not the tag has established communication with a remote transceiver.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the signal from the wireless communication circuit indicates whether or not the tag is generating power from an external source.

6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the signal from the wireless communication circuit indicates the tag is in communication with a transceiver in a known location.

7. The method according to claim 1, wherein the signal from the wireless communication circuit contains location information.

8. The method according to claim 1, wherein the signal from the wireless communication circuit indicates that communication with a remote transceiver has been dropped.

9. The method according to claim 1, wherein the collecting step further includes transitioning the sensor from a low power or off state to an on state responsive to the signal indicating a location of the good.

10. The method according to claim 1, wherein the collecting step further includes collecting data at a different rate, quantity, or level of precision responsive to the signal indicating a location of the good.

11. The method according to claim 1, further including a timer or a clock, wherein the collecting step further includes accessing the timer or the clock responsive to the actuator signal.

12. The method according to claim 1, wherein the collecting step further includes:

collecting data from the sensor according to a first rule;

evaluating the collected data to generate a result;

responsive to the result, collecting data from the sensor according to a second rule;

determining, using the data collected using the second rule, the characteristic or state of the good or of the good'"'"'s environment.

13. The method according to claim 12, wherein the first rule includes a rate of change value, a rate value, a range of values, absolute time, elapsed time, a defined value, or a threshold value.

14. An intelligent tag for attachment to a good, comprising:

a processor;

a memory;

a display;

a wireless communication circuit constructed to generate a signal indicating a location of the good;

a first sensor constructed to collect data responsive to the signal indicating a location of the good;

a power source; and

wherein the processor uses data from the first sensor to generate a message that is presented on the display.

15. The intelligent tag according to claim 14, wherein the processor generates a message signal to the display to generate a human readable indicia of the message on the display.

16. The intelligent tag according to claim 14, wherein the wireless communication circuit generates the signal indicating a location of the good responsive to receiving a wireless signal.

17. The intelligent tag according to claim 14, wherein the communication circuit generates the signal indicating a location of the good responsive to dropping a wireless signal.

18. The intelligent tag according to claim 14, wherein responsive to the signal indicating a location of the good, the processor changes the rate, quantity, or level of precision at which the sensor collects data, or the processor changes the rate, quantity, or precision at which data from the sensors is stored into the memory.

19. The intelligent tag according to claim 14, further including a second sensor.

20. A method of quality control for a good, comprising:

providing an intelligent tag on the good, the tag comprising a processor, a memory, a sensor, an actuator, and a power source;

receiving a signal from the actuator, the signal indicating a change in the good'"'"'s status;

collecting, responsive to the actuator signal, data from the sensor;

determining, using the collected data, a characteristic or state of the good or of the good'"'"'s environment; and

generating, responsive to the characteristic, a message.

21. The method according to claim 20, wherein the message is sent using a wireless communication circuit to a remote receiver.

22. The method according to claim 20, wherein the tag further includes a display, and the message is presented on the display.

23. The method according to claim 20, further including the step of transitioning the sensor from a low power or off state to an on state responsive to the actuator signal.

24. The method according to claim 20, further including the step of transitioning the processor from a low power or off state to an on state responsive to the actuator signal.

25. The method according to claim 20, wherein the collecting step further includes collecting data at a different rate, quantity, or level of precision responsive to the actuator signal.

26. The method according to claim 20, further including a timer or a clock, and wherein the collecting step further includes accessing the timer or the clock responsive to the actuator signal.

27. The method according to claim 20, wherein the collecting step further includes:

collecting data from the sensor according to a first rule;

evaluating the collected data to generate a result;

responsive to the result, collecting data from the sensor according to a second rule;

determining, using the data collected using the second rule, the characteristic or state of the good or of the good'"'"'s environment.

28. The method according to claim 27, wherein the first rule includes a rate value, a range of values, absolute time, elapsed time, a defined value, or a threshold value.

29. An intelligent tag for attachment to a good, comprising:

a processor;

a memory;

a display;

an actuator;

a first sensor constructed to collect data responsive to a signal from the actuator;

a power source; and

wherein the processor uses data from the first sensor to generate a message that is presented on the display.

30. The intelligent tag according to claim 29, wherein the processor generates a power signal to the display to generate a human readable indicia of the message on the display.

31. The intelligent tag according to claim 29, wherein responsive to the actuator signal, the processor changes the rate, quantity, or precision at which the sensor collects data, or the processor changes the density at which data from the sensors is stored into the memory.

32. The intelligent tag according to claim 29, wherein responsive to the actuator signal, the processor or the sensor is transitioned from a low power or off state to an on state.

33. The intelligent tag according to claim 29, further including a second sensor.

34. The intelligent tag according to claim 29, further including a wireless radio.

35. The intelligent tag according to claim 29, wherein the wireless radio is compliant with an 802.11, Zigbee NFC, or RFID protocol.

36. A method of quality control for a good, comprising:

providing an intelligent tag on the good, the tag comprising a processor, a memory, a sensor, a wireless communication circuit, and a power source;

broadcasting a signal;

receiving a location signal from the wireless communication circuit on the tag;

determining, responsive to the location signal, a location of the good;

transmitting an instruction signal to the wireless communication circuit on the tag, the wireless communication signal arranged to effect a change to a collection process for the tag'"'"'s sensor;

receiving a characteristic signal from the wireless communication circuit on the tag, the characteristic signal indicating a characteristic of the good or of the good'"'"'s environment; and

generating, responsive to the characteristic, a message.

37. The method according to claim 36, wherein changing the collection process includes making a change to a rate value, a range of values, absolute time, elapse time, a defined value, or a threshold value.

38. The method according to claim 36, where the instruction signal is arranged to cause the sensor to transition from a low power or off state to an on state responsive to the signal indicating a location of the good.

39. The method according to claim 36, where the instruction signal is arranged to cause the sensor to collecting data at a different rate, quantity, or level of precision.

40. The method according to claim 36, further including the step of communicating the message for inclusion in a data set that tracks the location and characteristic history of the good.

41. The method according to claim 36, further including a second sensor, not on the tag, that collects data regarding the environment adjacent the good.
