1. A lighting device, comprising:
- a radio frequency transceiver configured to;
transmit signals to and receive signals from a device of a plurality of devices; and
generate a respective angle of arrival measurement of a signal received from the device,wherein the signal received from the device includes an identifier of the device;
a light source configured to emit light for illumination;
a memory device storing data and programming instructions;
a processor coupled to the transceiver, the light source and the memory, wherein the processor, when executing the programming instructions, is configured to perform functions, including functions to;
obtain for the device the angle of arrival measurement generated by the transceiver based on the signal received from the device;
associate the obtained angle of arrival measurement with the identifier of the device; and
obtain, based on the angle of arrival measurements, a position in an indoor location of the device with respect to the lighting device.

A light source emits a modulated light, and a radio-frequency transceiver disposed therewith emits a radio-frequency signal. A mobile device may receive either or both signals and determine its position based thereon. The light and radio-frequency sources may be disposed in node in a network of said sources, and the nodes may communicate via the radio-frequency transceivers.

9. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a plurality of radio frequency transceivers, a signal from a device in an indoor location, wherein; each of the plurality of radio frequency transceivers is coupled to a processor of a respective visible light communication and radio-frequency-equipped node in a wireless network; measuring, by each respective one of the plurality of transceivers, an angle of arrival of the received signal at the respective transceiver; transmitting, via each of the radio frequency transceivers, a respective message in response to the received signal, each response message including information related to the angle of arrival measurement at the respective transceiver and a respective node identifier, wherein each respective node identifier uniquely identifies the respective node in the network; receiving, by the device in the indoor location, the respective transmitted response messages, each respective transmitted response message including the information in the received respective transmitted response messages; and computing by the device in the indoor location, a device location estimate using the information in the received respective transmitted response messages. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14)

15. A system, comprising:

a plurality of lighting devices arranged in the network and located within the indoor location; and a network controller device, the network controller device including; a controller radio frequency transceiver configured to communicate with the lighting devices in the network, and a controller processor configured to; control operation of a network of devices located in an indoor location, and determine a physical location of devices within the indoor location using angle of arrival measurements; and each respective one of the lighting devices in the network including; a light source for general illumination of a portion of the indoor location; a lighting device radio frequency transceiver configured to; transmit signals to and receive signals from the network controller device and at least two other lighting devices of the plurality of lighting devices in the network; and generate angle of arrival measurements of signals received from the at least two other lighting devices; a memory storing data and programming instructions; a lighting device processor coupled to the transceiver, the light source and the memory, wherein the lighting device processor, when executing the programming instructions, is configured to perform functions, including functions to; obtain the angle of arrival measurements of the at least two other lighting devices from the lighting device radio frequency transceiver; and transmit the obtained angle of arrival measurements to the network controller device with an identifier of the respective lighting device of the at least two other lighting devices for use in determining physical locations of the at least two other lighting devices within the indoor location. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24)
