Abstract

A light source emits a modulated light, and a radio-frequency transceiver disposed therewith emits a radio-frequency signal. A mobile device may receive either or both signals and determine its position based thereon. The light and radio-frequency sources may be disposed in node in a network of said sources, and the nodes may communicate via the radio-frequency transceivers.

Claims

1. A lighting device, comprising:

a radio frequency transceiver configured to;

transmit signals to and receive signals from a device of a plurality of devices; and

generate a respective angle of arrival measurement of a signal received from the device,

wherein the signal received from the device includes an identifier of the device;

a light source configured to emit light for illumination;

a memory device storing data and programming instructions;

a processor coupled to the transceiver, the light source and the memory, wherein the processor, when executing the programming instructions, is configured to perform functions, including functions to;

obtain for the device the angle of arrival measurement generated by the transceiver based on the signal received from the device;

associate the obtained angle of arrival measurement with the identifier of the device; and

obtain, based on the angle of arrival measurements, a position in an indoor location of the device with respect to the lighting device.

2. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the processor when executing programming instructions, is further configured to perform functions, including functions to:

send the generated angle of arrival measurement and the identifier of the device to a position determination server via the radio frequency transceiver for determination of the position of the device in the indoor location.

3. The lighting device of claim 2, wherein:

the radio frequency transceiver is further configured to measure a received signal strength of the signals received from the device; and

the processor when executing programming instructions, is further configured to perform functions, including functions to;

obtain the received signal strength measurements from the radio frequency transceiver; and

send the received signal strength measurement of a signal received from the device of the plurality of devices with the identifier of the lighting device to the position determination server via the radio frequency transceiver as a supplement to the angle of arrival measurement corresponding to the device.

4. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the lighting device is a node in a network of devices, and the device is a lighting device coupled to the network as network nodes.

5. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the radio frequency transceiver is configured to:

receive a standard compliant advertising packet broadcast by a mobile phone; and

output an angle of arrival measurement of the advertising packet received from the mobile device; and

wherein the processor is configured to;

estimate a position of the mobile device broadcasting the advertising packet based on the received angle of arrival measurement.

6. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the lighting device is also configured to communicate via visible light communication.

7. The lighting device of claim 1, further comprising:

an antenna coupled to the radio transceiver, and

the antenna is configured to enable detection of phase differences of received signals.

8. The lighting device of claim 7, wherein the antenna is one of:

a directional antenna;

fixed directional antenna;

mechanically steered antenna;

or

phased array antenna.

9. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a plurality of radio frequency transceivers, a signal from a device in an indoor location, wherein;

each of the plurality of radio frequency transceivers is coupled to a processor of a respective visible light communication and radio-frequency-equipped node in a wireless network;

measuring, by each respective one of the plurality of transceivers, an angle of arrival of the received signal at the respective transceiver;

transmitting, via each of the radio frequency transceivers, a respective message in response to the received signal, each response message including information related to the angle of arrival measurement at the respective transceiver and a respective node identifier, wherein each respective node identifier uniquely identifies the respective node in the network;

receiving, by the device in the indoor location, the respective transmitted response messages, each respective transmitted response message including the information in the received respective transmitted response messages; and

computing by the device in the indoor location, a device location estimate using the information in the received respective transmitted response messages.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

accumulating by the device in the indoor location the angle of arrival measurements from the received response messages; and

time-correlating the received response messages for the device based on a reception time of the received signal.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

selecting a first angle of arrival measurement from the accumulated angle of arrival measurements based on the time correlation of the received response messages; and

estimating the position of the device using the selected first angle of arrival measurement and the respective device identifier associated with each of the first and second selected specific angle of arrival measurements.

12. The method of claim 9, further comprises:

measuring, by the radio frequency transceiver of the device in the indoor location, a received signal strength of each respective response message; and

using the measured received signal strength of each respective signal to supplement the angle of arrival measurement of each respective response message when estimating the position in the indoor location of each of the respective node with respect to the device in the indoor location.

13. The method of claim 9, further comprises:

receiving, by each of the radio frequency transceivers, signals from other radio frequency transceivers of the plurality of radio frequency transceivers;

measuring angles of arrival for each signal received from the other radio frequency transceivers,

obtaining node identifiers from each signal received from the other radio frequency transceivers; and

updating network information using the measured angles of arrival and the obtained node identifiers from the other radio frequency transceivers of nodes in the network.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the network information includes one or more of a network node geometry, a network map or a routing table.

15. A system, comprising:

a plurality of lighting devices arranged in the network and located within the indoor location; and

a network controller device, the network controller device including;

a controller radio frequency transceiver configured to communicate with the lighting devices in the network, and

a controller processor configured to;

control operation of a network of devices located in an indoor location, and

determine a physical location of devices within the indoor location using angle of arrival measurements; and

each respective one of the lighting devices in the network including;

a light source for general illumination of a portion of the indoor location;

a lighting device radio frequency transceiver configured to;

transmit signals to and receive signals from the network controller device and at least two other lighting devices of the plurality of lighting devices in the network; and

generate angle of arrival measurements of signals received from the at least two other lighting devices;

a memory storing data and programming instructions;

a lighting device processor coupled to the transceiver, the light source and the memory, wherein the lighting device processor, when executing the programming instructions, is configured to perform functions, including functions to;

obtain the angle of arrival measurements of the at least two other lighting devices from the lighting device radio frequency transceiver; and

transmit the obtained angle of arrival measurements to the network controller device with an identifier of the respective lighting device of the at least two other lighting devices for use in determining physical locations of the at least two other lighting devices within the indoor location.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the network controller device is a lighting device, a mobile device or a server.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the controller processor of the network controller device when executing programming instructions, is further configured to perform functions, including functions to:

update a network map based on the determined physical location of the at least two lighting devices.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the network map includes individual physical locations of the at least two other lighting devices in the indoor location.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein for each respective lighting device:

the lighting device radio frequency transceiver is further configured to measure a received signal strength of the signals received from one or more lighting devices of the plurality of lighting devicesl; and

the lighting device processor when executing programming instructions, is further configured to perform functions, including functions to;

obtain the received signal strength measurements from the lighting device radio frequency transceiver; and

send the received signal strength measurement of a respective signal received from a specific lighting device of the one or more plurality of lighting devices with an identifier of the specific lighting device to the network controller device via the radio frequency transceiver to supplement an angle of arrival measurement corresponding to the specific lighting device.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein the plurality of lighting devices are nodes in the network, and each of the plurality of lighting devices are coupled to the network as network nodes.

21. The system of claim 17, wherein the lighting device radio frequency transceiver of each of the lighting devices of the plurality of lighting devices is configured to:

receive a standard compliant advertising packet broadcast by a mobile phone; and

output an angle of arrival measurement of the advertising packet received from the mobile device;

wherein the processor of each of the lighting devices is configured to;

estimate a position of the mobile device broadcasting the advertising packet including information based on the received angle of arrival measurement.

22. The system of claim 15, wherein each lighting device of the plurality of lighting devices further comprises:

an antenna coupled to the lighting device radio transceiver, and

the antenna being configured to enable detection of phase differences of the received signals.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the antenna of each lighting device of the plurality of lighting devices is one of:

a directional antenna;

a fixed directional antenna;

a mechanically steered antenna;

or

a phased array antenna.

24. The system of claim 15, wherein the lighting device is further configured to communicate via visible light communication.
