1. A stent for supporting leaflets of an implantable valve comprising:

  • (a) a proximal section extending circumferentially around an axis, the proximal section including a plurality of elongated proximal members connected with one another at a juncture, each of the proximal members having a distal end, a proximal end opposite the distal end, and a mean width, and distalmost ones of the proximal members being attached to each other at distalmost junctures of the proximal section; and

    (b) a leaflet support section extending circumferentially around the axis, the leaflet support section being offset from the proximal section in a distal direction along the axis, the leaflet support section including a plurality of elongated leaflet support members each having a distal end and a proximal end opposite the distal end, each of the proximal ends of the leaflet support members being directly attached to a respective plurality of proximal members of the proximal section at a respective distalmost juncture such that at least a majority of the distalmost junctures are attached to one of the leaflet support members, leaflet support members in each pair of a plurality of pairs of the leaflet support members being directly attached to each other, the plurality of pairs of the directly attached leaflet support members defining a plurality of cusps projecting in the distal direction at locations spaced circumferentially around the axis, each leaflet support member of each pair of the directly attached leaflet support members being adjacent to a leaflet support member of another pair of the leaflet support members such that the respective adjacent leaflet support members and respective proximal members attached to the proximal ends of the adjacent leaflet support members together (i) define a gap therebetween extending from the proximal ends of such proximal members to the distal ends of the respective adjacent leaflet support members attached thereto, the gap being absent of stent structures, (ii) bound a valley between the cusps, and (iii) are unconnected to other stent structures between their proximal and distal ends, at least one of the leaflet support members having an opening extending therethrough and having a mean perimeter greater than a mean perimeter of at least one of the proximal members, the stent being radially collapsible and expandable.
