1. An air separator for extracorporeal fluid treatment sets comprising:
- a first chamber where fluid can be received, the first chamber presenting;
a bottom wall,a top wall, anda lateral wall extending between the top and bottom walls,an inlet and an outlet port associated to the bottom wall and in fluid communication with the first chamber,a first channel having a first portion at a first end connected to the inlet port, and a second portion at a second end terminating into the first chamber, the first channel extending along at least a portion of the lateral wall and having the first end connected to the inlet port, the second end terminating in an orifice which is closer to the top wall than to the bottom wall, the orifice opening into the first chamber facing the top wall and extending along a plane perpendicular to the lateral wall, and whereina filter engaged to the bottom wall in correspondence of the outlet port and axially extending into the first chamber according to a direction substantially parallel to the first channel, the filter presenting an overall axial extension which is not greater than 70% of the overall longitudinal extension of the first channel,which includes a ratio A1/A2 greater than 0.25 and less than 0.75, whereinA1 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the orifice facing the top wall, andA2 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first chamber in correspondence of a section horizontally aligned with the orifice and lying in the plane of the orifice,which includes a ratio A1/A3 between 1.5 and 2.5, whereinA3 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first portion of the first channel, andwhich includes a ratio D2/D1 greater than 0.5, whereinD1 represents a measure of a distance between a top wall inner surface of the first chamber and a bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber, andD2 represents a measure of a distance between a horizontal plane within which the orifice of the first channel extends and the bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber.

Abstract
An air separator (1) comprises a first chamber (2) where blood or other fluid can be received, an inlet and an outlet port associated to the bottom wall (4) and in fluid communication with the first chamber. A first channel (14) extending along the lateral wall of the separator and has a first and a second portion (16 and 18). The channel second portion (18) terminally forms an orifice (15) facing the chamber and extending in an area closer to a top wall (5) of the chamber (2) than to the bottom wall of the same chamber. The orifice faces the top of the separator and has a flow passage cross section greater than that of a first portion (16) of the channel.

1. An air separator for extracorporeal fluid treatment sets comprising:

a first chamber where fluid can be received, the first chamber presenting; a bottom wall, a top wall, and a lateral wall extending between the top and bottom walls, an inlet and an outlet port associated to the bottom wall and in fluid communication with the first chamber, a first channel having a first portion at a first end connected to the inlet port, and a second portion at a second end terminating into the first chamber, the first channel extending along at least a portion of the lateral wall and having the first end connected to the inlet port, the second end terminating in an orifice which is closer to the top wall than to the bottom wall, the orifice opening into the first chamber facing the top wall and extending along a plane perpendicular to the lateral wall, and wherein a filter engaged to the bottom wall in correspondence of the outlet port and axially extending into the first chamber according to a direction substantially parallel to the first channel, the filter presenting an overall axial extension which is not greater than 70% of the overall longitudinal extension of the first channel, which includes a ratio A1/A2 greater than 0.25 and less than 0.75, wherein A1 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the orifice facing the top wall, and A2 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first chamber in correspondence of a section horizontally aligned with the orifice and lying in the plane of the orifice, which includes a ratio A1/A3 between 1.5 and 2.5, wherein A3 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first portion of the first channel, and which includes a ratio D2/D1 greater than 0.5, wherein D1 represents a measure of a distance between a top wall inner surface of the first chamber and a bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber, and D2 represents a measure of a distance between a horizontal plane within which the orifice of the first channel extends and the bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22)

23. An air separator for extracorporeal fluid treatment sets comprising:

a first chamber where fluid can be received, the first chamber presenting; a first chamber bottom wall, a first chamber top wall, and a first chamber lateral wall extending between the first chamber top and bottom walls, first chamber inlet port and a first chamber outlet port associated to the first chamber bottom wall and in fluid communication with the first chamber, a first channel extending along at least a portion of the first chamber lateral wall and having a first end connected to the first chamber inlet port, and a second end terminating in a first orifice which is closer to said first chamber top wall than to said first chamber bottom wall, wherein said first channel has a first portion extending from the first end and at least a second portion terminating at the second end, the second end terminating where the fluid may first flow laterally out of the first channel and into the first chamber, a filter engaged to the first chamber bottom wall in correspondence of the first chamber outlet port and axially extending into the first chamber according to a direction substantially parallel to the first channel, the filter presenting an overall axial extension which is not greater than 70% of the overall longitudinal extension of the first channel, a second chamber configured to receive fluid and positioned in side by side relationship with respect to the first chamber, the second chamber presenting a second chamber bottom wall, a second chamber top wall, and a second chamber lateral wall extending between the second chamber top wall and the second chamber bottom wall, the second chamber provided with a second chamber inlet port and a second chamber outlet port, the first chamber and the second chamber sharing a common side wall which extends in correspondence with a central zone of the air separator, a second channel extending along the lateral wall of the second chamber and having a first end connected to the second chamber inlet port, a second end terminating into the second chamber, and a deflector in correspondence with the second end defining a second orifice facing the lateral wall, and wherein said common side wall includes a first wall portion, a second wall portion parallel to the first wall portion, and a deflecting portion connecting said first wall portion and second wall portion forming said deflector of the second channel, the deflecting portion horizontally aligned with the first orifice of the first channel and defining an increase of a flow passage cross section area of the first chamber in correspondence with a section horizontally aligned with the first orifice of the first channel, which includes a ratio A1/A2 greater than 0.25 and less than 0.75, wherein A1 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first orifice facing the top wall, and A2 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first chamber in correspondence of a section horizontally aligned with the first orifice and lying in the plane of the first orifice, which includes a ratio A1/A3 between 1.5 and 2.5, wherein A3 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first portion of the first channel, and which includes a ratio D2/D1 greater than 0.5, wherein D1 represents a measure of a distance between a top wall inner surface of the first chamber and a bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber, and D2 represents a measure of a distance between a horizontal plane within which the first orifice of the first channel extends and the bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber, said air separator comprising at least one item selected from the group consisting of; a venous line which has an end designed to be connected to a patient, said venous line including a first flexible tube engaged to the first chamber inlet port, and a second flexible tube engaged to the first chamber outlet port, and an arterial line which has an end designed to be connected to a patient, said arterial line including a third flexible tube engaged to the second chamber inlet port, and a fourth flexible tube engaged to the second chamber outlet port and to one wall of said second chamber for forming a loop which is symmetric about a loop axis transverse to the second chamber lateral wall.

a dialysis liquid preparation module for preparing dialysis liquid, at least a waste line for receiving spent dialysate, a blood treatment unit having a first treatment chamber connected to the dialysis liquid preparation module and to the waste line, and a second treatment chamber separated from the first treatment chamber by means of a semipermeable membrane, and an air separator for extracorporeal fluid treatment sets comprising; a first chamber where fluid can be received, the first chamber presenting; a first chamber bottom wall, a first chamber top wall, and a first chamber lateral wall extending between the top and bottom walls, a first chamber inlet port and a first chamber outlet port associated to the bottom wall and in fluid communication with the first chamber, a first channel extending along at least a portion of the first chamber lateral wall and having a first end connected to the first chamber inlet port, and a second end terminating in a first orifice which is closer to said first chamber top wall than to said first chamber bottom wall, wherein said first channel has a first portion extending from the first end and at least a second portion terminating at the second end, the second end terminating where the fluid may first flow laterally out of the first channel and into the first chamber, a filter engaged to the bottom wall in correspondence of the first chamber outlet port and axially extending into the first chamber according to a direction substantially parallel to the first channel, the filter presenting an overall axial extension which is not greater than 70% of the overall longitudinal extension of the first channel, a second chamber configured to receive fluid and positioned in side by side relationship with respect to said first chamber, the second chamber presenting a second chamber bottom wall, a second chamber top wall, a second chamber lateral wall extending between the second chamber top wall and the second chamber bottom wall, the second chamber provided with a second chamber inlet port and a second chamber outlet port, the first chamber and the second chamber sharing a common side wall which extends in correspondence with a central zone of the air separator, and a second channel extending along the lateral wall of the second chamber and having a first end connected to the second chamber inlet port, a second end terminating into the second chamber, and a deflector in correspondence with the second end defining a second orifice facing the lateral wall, and wherein said common side wall presents a first wall portion, a second wall portion parallel to the first wall portion, and a deflecting portion connecting said first wall portion and second wall portion forming said deflector of the second channel, the deflecting portion horizontally aligned with the first orifice of the first channel and defining an increase of a flow passage cross section area of the first chamber in correspondence with a section horizontally aligned with the first orifice of the first channel, which includes a ratio A1/A2 greater than 0.25 and less than 0.75, wherein A1 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first orifice facing the top wall, and A2 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first chamber in correspondence of a section horizontally aligned with the first orifice and lying in the plane of the first orifice, which includes a ratio A1/A3 between 1.5 and 2.5, wherein A3 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first portion of the first channel, and which includes a ratio D2/D1 greater than 0.5, wherein D1 represents a measure of a distance between a top wall inner surface of the first chamber and a bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber, and D2 represents a measure of a distance between a horizontal plane within which the first orifice of the first channel extends and the bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber, said air separator comprising at least one item selected from the group consisting of; a venous line which has an end designed to be connected to a patient, said venous line including a first flexible tube engaged to the first chamber inlet port, and a second flexible tube engaged to the first chamber outlet port, and an arterial line which has an end designed to be connected to the patient, said arterial line including a third flexible tube engaged to the second chamber inlet port, and a fourth flexible tube engaged to the second chamber outlet port and to one wall of said second chamber for forming a loop which is symmetric about a loop axis transverse to the second chamber lateral wall, wherein the arterial line is connected to the second chamber inlet and the venous line is connected to the second chamber outlet.

25. An air separator for extracorporeal fluid treatment sets comprising:

a first chamber in which fluid can be received, the first chamber including; a bottom wall, a top wall, and a lateral wall extending between the top and bottom walls, wherein said lateral wall presents a front wall, a rear wall spaced from the front wall, and first and second side walls extending between said front and rear walls, an inlet and an outlet port associated to the bottom wall and in fluid communication with the first chamber, a first channel having a first portion at a first end connected to the inlet port, and a second portion at a second end terminating into the first chamber, wherein the first channel extends along at least a portion of the lateral wall and has the first end connected to the inlet port, the second end terminating in an orifice which is closer to said top wall than to said bottom wall, the second end terminating such that fluid may flow laterally out of the first channel and into the first chamber, said air separator comprising an intermediate wall extending between the front and rear walls and laterally delimiting said channel in cooperation with said first side wall, and a filter engaged to the bottom wall in correspondence of the outlet port and axially extending into the first chamber according to a direction substantially parallel to the first channel, the filter presenting an overall axial extension which is not greater than 70% of the overall longitudinal extension of the first channel, wherein the second end of said first channel forms the orifice that opens into the first chamber, faces the top wall and extends along a plane perpendicular to the lateral wall of the first chamber, and said second side wall presents a first wall portion, a second wall portion parallel to the first wall portion and a deflecting portion connecting said first wall portion and second wall portion, the deflecting portion horizontally aligned with the orifice of the first channel and defining an increase of a flow passage cross section area of the first chamber in correspondence with a section horizontally aligned with the orifice, which includes a ratio A1/A2 greater than 0.25 and less than 0.75, wherein A1 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the orifice facing the top wall, and A2 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first chamber in correspondence of a section horizontally aligned with the orifice and lying in the plane of the orifice, which includes a ratio A1/A3 between 1.5 and 2.5, wherein A3 represents a measure of a flow passage cross section area of the first portion of the first channel, and which includes a ratio D2/D1 greater than 0.5, wherein D1 represents a measure of a distance between a top wall inner surface of the first chamber and a bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber, and D2 represents a measure of a distance between a horizontal plane within which the orifice of the first channel extends and the bottom wall inner surface of the first chamber.
