Abstract

A rotary molding system for molding food products, mold cavities formed when a mold shell rotates mold shapes disposed along the mold shell into a fill position between a fill plate and a wear plate. Molded food products are removed from mold cavities using knock-out cups, the use of air pressure, or the use of a vacuum source disposed below the mold cavity, without the need to slow the rotation of the mold shell. Knock-out cups may be used with a heating system to reduce accumulation of unwanted materials on the knock-out cups. The rotary molding system can also be used to form products with contoured surfaces. A smart tagging system can be used to ensure that compatible sets of mold shells and knock out cups are being used. A vacuum region may be disposed upstream of the fill position to remove air within the mold cavity prior to filling.

Claims

1. A rotary mold system for molding food products, the rotary mold system comprising:

a cylindrical mold shell defining mold shapes therein and configured to rotate, wherein the cylindrical mold shell has an inner surface and an outer surface; and

a fill plate having an inner surface and an outer surface, wherein the inner surface of the fill plate includes a plurality of perforations and faces the outer surface of the cylindrical mold shell.

2. The rotary mold system of claim 1, wherein the inner surface of the fill plate is curved.

3. The rotary mold system of claim 2, wherein the inner surface of the fill plate is curved to complement a curvature of the cylindrical mold shell.

4. The rotary mold system of claim 1, further comprising a feed plate, wherein the outer surface of the fill plate faces the feed plate.

5. The rotary mold system of claim 4, wherein the outer surface of the fill plate contacts the feed plate.

6. The rotary mold system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of perforations defined in the inner surface of the fill plate form a perforated region through which food mass is configured to pass, wherein the perforated region is aligned with the mold shapes defined in the cylindrical mold shell.

7. The rotary mold system of claim 1, wherein the inner surface of the fill plate contacts the outer surface of the cylindrical mold shell.

The rotary mold system of claim 1, further comprising a wear plate having an outer surface, wherein the cylindrical mold shell is configured to rotate between the wear plate and the fill plate such that the outer surface of the wear plate faces the inner surface of the cylindrical mold shell and the outer surface of the cylindrical mold shell faces the inner surface of the fill plate.

9. The rotary mold system of claim 8, wherein the outer surface of the wear plate contacts the inner surface of the cylindrical mold shell.

The rotary mold system of claim 8, wherein mold cavities are formed when the mold shapes are between the fill plate and the wear plate, and wherein the mold cavities have a depth corresponding to a thickness of the cylindrical mold shell, and wherein the mold cavities have a bottom surface formed by the outer surface of the wear plate.

11. The rotary mold system of claim 1, further comprising a stripper plate including a plurality of perforations defined therein, wherein the outer surface of the fill plate faces the stripper plate.

12. The rotary mold system of claim 11, wherein the stripper plate is moveable relative to the fill plate, and wherein the perforations defined in the stripper plate are moveable into and out of alignment with the perforations defined in the fill plate.

13. The rotary mold system of claim 12, wherein alignment of the perforations defined in the stripper plate and the perforations defined in the fill plate allow food mass to pass through the stripper plate and into the fill plate.

14. The rotary mold system of claim 12, wherein movement of the stripper plate is a sliding movement along a longitudinal length of the fill plate.

The rotary mold system of claim 12, further comprising a first push rod disposed on a first side of the stripper plate and a second push rod disposed on a second side of the stripper plate opposite the first side, wherein the first and second push rods cooperate to extend and retract to move the stripper plate.

The rotary mold system of claim 12, further comprising a first pair of push rods disposed on a first side of the stripper plate and a second pair of push rods disposed on a second side of the stripper plate opposite the first side, wherein the first pair of push rods cooperate with the second pair of push rods to extend and retract to move the stripper plate.

17. The rotary mold system of claim 12, wherein the perforations defined in the stripper plate are a same size as the perforations defined in the fill plate.

18. The rotary mold system of claim 11, further comprising a feed plate, wherein the stripper plate is disposed between the feed plate and the fill plate.

19. The rotary mold system of claim 1, further comprising a wiper positioned on the inner surface of the fill plate and configured to contact the outer surface of the cylindrical mold shell.
