1. A system comprising:

  • a plurality of sensing devices configured to generate acoustic emission (AE) signals that are representative of acoustic emission waves propagating through at least one component of a machine, wherein the at least one component has a damage state and the damage state has a resonance frequency; and

    a processing subsystem that is in operational communication with the plurality of sensing devices to receive AE signals, wherein the processing subsystem includes a resonance detection system that identifies the resonance frequency of the damage state during operation of the machine using the AE signals;

    wherein the processing subsystem monitors the damage state of the at least one component using the resonance detection system; and

    wherein the resonance frequency of the damage state of the at least one component changes over time and the processing subsystem monitors the magnitude of the AE signals proximate the resonance frequency and the change in the resonance frequency over time to determine risk to health of the at least one component.
