Methods for adjusting near field communications circuitry during mobile payment transactions
First Claim
1. A method for using an electronic device in a mobile payment transaction at a near field communications reader device, comprising:
- initiating the mobile payment transaction when the electronic device is placed within a field generated by the near field communications reader device;
in response to a transfer of at least one packet between the electronic device and the near field communications reader device failing, operating the electronic device using at least one new control setting, including updating by the electronic device at least one of;
a transmit power control setting, a phase offset setting, a wakeup threshold setting, a damping coefficient setting, or a frame delay time setting; and
while the electronic device is located within the field, automatically reattempting by the electronic device the mobile payment transaction using the new control setting.

Abstract
Methods for operating a portable electronic device to conduct mobile payment transactions are provided. The electronic device may include near field communications circuitry having a transmitter, a receiver, and a field detector for detecting a field from a merchant terminal. The receiver is typically idle. The receiver may be activated when the field detector detects that the electronic device is within the field of the merchant terminal. The transmitter may then be used to perform link establishment and data transfer. If the payment transaction fails for any reason, one or more hardware settings on the electronic device may be adjusted to help increase the chance of a successful transaction in a subsequent payment attempt. Another transaction may be attempted when the user moves the device out of the field and back into the field or may be performed automatically as long as the device is still within the field.

7. A method for using an electronic device in a mobile payment transaction at a near field communications reader device, comprising:
-
initiating the mobile payment transaction when the electronic device is placed within a field generated by the near field communications reader device; attempting to transfer one or more data packets associated with the mobile payment transaction from the electronic device to the near field communications reader device; and in response to a transfer of at least one data packet of the one or more data packets between the electronic device and the near field communications reader device failing, updating by the electronic device at least one control setting on the electronic device prior to performing a subsequent payment transaction attempt, including reconfiguring the electronic device with at least one new hardware setting according to a table of predetermined settings stored on the electronic device. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18)
