1. A method for over-the-air (OTA) virtual card transfer between near field communications (NFC)-enabled mobile devices, the method comprising:

  • at an OTA provisioning server comprising at least one computer having associated hardware;

    receiving, from a sending mobile device operated by a sender, data for provisioning a virtual card to a receiving mobile device, the data including a virtual card type selected by the sender from a plurality of virtual card types and a receiver for the virtual card, and a recipient mobile device number corresponding to the receiving mobile device, wherein each of the sending mobile device and the receiving mobile device includes an NFC-enabled mobile phone device;

    accessing a database using the recipient mobile device number to obtain mobile device type information related to the receiving mobile device; and

    in response to determining that the mobile device type information indicates that the receiving mobile device is an NFC enabled mobile device, provisioning the virtual card to the receiving mobile device via an OTA interface, wherein provisioning the virtual card includes sending a control message from the OTA provisioning server to the receiving mobile device that triggers a wallet application in the receiving mobile device to initiate downloading of the virtual card from the OTA provisioning server to the receiving mobile device, wherein the virtual card is immediately presentable by the receiving mobile device at a point of sale terminal via NFC, and wherein the virtual card represents one of;

    a credit card, a debit card, a prepaid card, a loyalty card, a rewards card, and a coupon and, wherein provisioning the virtual card to the receiving mobile device comprises, in response to receiving the data for provisioning the virtual card, creating a new virtual card account corresponding to the virtual card type selected by the sender and designating the receiver as an intended recipient.
