Abstract

Disclosed are various embodiments of load shedding techniques for a guided surface wave power delivery system. In one embodiment, among others, a guided surface wave receive structure is configured to obtain electrical energy from a guided surface wave traveling along a lossy conducting medium. A user device is coupled to the guided surface wave receive structure as an electrical load, where a load shedding application of the user device is configured to receive load shedding instructions from a controller device coupled to the guided surface waveguide probe and is configured to regulate user device consumption of the electrical energy provided by the guided surface wave.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a guided surface wave receive structure configured to obtain electrical energy from a guided surface wave traveling along a lossy conducting medium;

a user device coupled to the guided surface wave receive structure, the user device presenting an electrical load at an excitation source coupled to a guided surface waveguide probe generating the guided surface wave; and

a load shedding application of the user device configured to receive load shedding instructions from a controller device, wherein the load shedding application is configured to regulate user device consumption of the electrical energy provided by the guided surface wave.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the load shedding application is configured to switch the user device to consume a back-up battery power supply responsive to receiving the load shedding instructions.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the load shedding application is further configured to utilize the battery power supply for a period of time specified in the load shedding instructions.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the load shedding application is further configured to resume consumption of the electrical energy embodied in the guided surface wave after an expiration of the period of time specified in the load shedding instructions, wherein the back-up battery power supply is charged using the electrical energy at a rate specified by the load shedding instructions.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the load shedding application is configured to switch the user device to deactivate certain user device components responsive to receiving the load shedding instructions.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the load shedding application is further configured to deactivate the certain user device components for a period of time specified in the load shedding instructions.

7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the load shedding application is further configured to determine the certain user device components by consulting a user device profile.

8. An apparatus, comprising:

a guided surface waveguide probe configured to transmit a guided surface wave along a lossy conducting medium; and

a load shedding controller device configured to send load status shedding instructions to regulate user device consumption of electrical energy provided by the guided surface wave.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the load shedding instructions contain a user device identifier indicating a user device that is subject to the load shedding instructions.

10. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the load shedding instructions specify an end time for which the user device is able to resume consumption of the electrical energy provided by the guided surface wave, wherein the end time is different for different user devices.

11. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the load shedding instructions are embedded in the guided surface wave.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a data modulator circuitry adapted to embed the load shedding instructions.

13. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the load shedding instructions are transmitted in an out-of-band communication that is separate from the guided surface wave.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising a network interface communication module adapted to send the load shedding instructions in the out-of-band communication.

15. A method comprising:

receiving, by a guided surface wave receive structure of a user device, a guided surface wave from a guided surface waveguide probe; and

regulating user device consumption of electrical energy provided by the guided surface wave based at least in part on load shedding instructions.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising decoding load shedding instructions that are embedded as part of the guided surface wave.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising querying a user device profile stored locally on the user device to determine a particular action to be implemented to conserve user device consumption of the electrical energy provided by the guided surface wave.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the particular action comprises switching the user device to receiving back-up battery power.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the particular action comprises deactivating at least one user device component designated in the user device profile.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the load shedding instructions indicate initiation of a premium rate for consumption of the electrical energy provided by the guided surface wave, wherein the user device profile specifies certain user device components that are authorized to consume the electrical energy at the premium rate.
