Abstract

A blood pump system includes a first implantable housing, an implantable blood pump independent from the first implantable housing, and a percutaneous extension. The first implantable housing includes a rechargeable power storage device. The implantable blood pump supplements the pumping function of a heart. The rechargeable power storage device supplies electrical power to the implantable blood pump. The percutaneous extension is coupled to the rechargeable power storage device and adapted to traverse the skin. The percutaneous extension is configured to releasably connect to an external power supply adapted to provide power for recharging or supplementing the rechargeable power storage device to power the implantable blood pump.

Claims

1. A partially implantable blood pump system comprising:

an implantable blood pump;

an implantable internal controller coupled to the implantable blood pump;

an implantable rechargeable battery coupled with the internal controller; and

a percutaneous cable coupled with the implantable internal controller and extending through a skin of a patient, the percutaneous cable being configured to releasably couple the internal controller with an external power source and/or an external controller and to provide both power and data transfer to the implantable internal controller, the percutaneous cable comprising a plurality of lead sets, each of the lead sets configured to alternately provide power and data to the implantable internal controller such that power provided from one or more of the lead sets is temporarily discontinued while data is provided from one or more of the lead sets to the implantable internal controller;

wherein the internal controller is configured to;

determine a power level of the rechargeable battery;

adjust recharging of the rechargeable battery with the external power source based on the determined power level of the rechargeable battery;

receive pump information associated with an operational speed of the implantable blood pump from the implantable blood pump, the pump information associated with the operational speed of the implantable blood pump comprising at least one of an inlet or outlet pressure of the implantable blood pump and a blood flow through the implantable blood pump;

transmit the pump information associated with the operational speed of the implantable blood pump to the external controller;

receive commands from the external controller to change the operational speed of the implantable blood pump; and

adjust power delivery to the implantable blood pump from the external power source or the rechargeable battery to control the operational speed of the implantable blood pump.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

the external controller, the external controller comprising a monitoring device configured to couple with the internal controller via the percutaneous cable and to transmit control signals to and receive signals from the internal controller through the percutaneous cable.

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising the external controller, the external controller comprising a monitoring device coupled with a programming wand, the programming wand configured to wirelessly communicate with the internal controller via a non-invasive telemetry system.

The system of claim 1, further comprising an electrical conduit coupling the implantable blood pump with the internal controller, and wherein the internal controller is configured to adjust power to the implantable blood pump through the electrical conduit, and wherein the internal controller is further configured to transmit internal system information to the external controller via a non-invasive telemetry device or the percutaneous cable coupling the internal controller with the external controller.

The system of claim 4, wherein the internal system information comprises battery information including battery life information, wherein the internal controller or external controller is configured transmit an alert to a patient when the battery information indicates a battery level below a low power threshold and to terminate power transmission from the rechargeable battery when the battery information indicates a battery level below a damage threshold, the damage threshold being lower than the low power threshold.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the alert comprises a light configured to flash on an external portion of the percutaneous lead.

7. The system of claim 4, wherein the internal system information comprises error information comprising at least one of:

battery error information, electrical conduit error information, and percutaneous cable error information, wherein the electrical conduit error information or percutaneous cable error information comprises failed conductor information associated with the electrical conduit or the percutaneous cable.

The system of claim 4, further comprising memory coupled with the internal controller, the memory configured to store the internal system information comprising at least one of pump speed information, physiological data of the patient, error information, and battery life information for subsequent download via the non-invasive telemetry system or the percutaneous cable.

The system of claim 4, wherein the percutaneous cable has a diameter smaller than a diameter of the electrical conduit, wherein the percutaneous cable comprises an internal portion configured to remain internally within a patient and an external portion configured to remain external to the patient during implantable blood pump operation, and wherein the external portion comprises a connector end for coupling with an external power source or an external controller and a break-away portion along a length thereof such that the connector end is separable from a remainder of the percutaneous cable when subjected to a force greater than a break-away force.

The system of claim 9, wherein the connector end of the percutaneous cable is reversibly separable, such that the connector end may be recoupled with the remainder of the percutaneous cable after the connector end is subjected to the force greater than the break-away force, wherein the external portion comprises a light for delivering signals to the patient.

The system of claim 1, wherein the pump information associated with the operational speed of the implantable blood pump comprises an inlet or outlet pressure of the implantable blood pump and wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to supply power for normal operation of the implantable blood pump for a period of at least ten minutes.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the implantable blood pump is housed in a housing separate from the implantable internal controller, and wherein the implantable rechargeable battery is housed in a housing separate from the implantable internal controller and the implantable blood pump.

The system of claim 12, wherein the implantable blood pump is housed in a first housing, the implantable internal controller is housed in a second housing, and the implantable rechargeable battery is housed in a third housing, and wherein the first, second, and third housings are separate housings.

The system of claim 1, wherein the percutaneous cable comprises an internal portion configured to remain internally within a patient and an external portion configured to remain external to the patient during implantable blood pump operation, and wherein the external portion comprises a connector end for coupling with an external power source or an external controller and a break-away portion along a length thereof such that the connector end is separable from a remainder of the percutaneous cable when subjected to a force greater than a break-away force, wherein the break-away force is selected to reduce the strain on a portion of the percutaneous cable entering the skin opening of the patient.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the break-away force is selected to be less than a force expected to cause damage to tissue surrounding the skin opening.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the connector end of the percutaneous cable is reversibly separable, such that the connector end may be recoupled with the remainder of the percutaneous cable after the connector end is subjected to the force greater than the break-away force.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to supply power for normal operation of the implantable blood pump for a period of at least ten minutes.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the internal controller is further configured to:

monitor a physiological parameter of a patient; and

transmit information associated with the physiological parameter of the patient to the external controller.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the physiological parameter of the patient comprises blood pressure.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein the physiological parameter of the patient comprises an activity level of the patient, and wherein the commands received from the external controller to change the operational speed of the implantable blood pump are based on the activity level of the patient.

The system of claim 1, wherein each of the lead sets are configured to alternately provide power and data to the implantable internal controller such that data provided from one or more of the lead sets is temporarily discontinued while power is provided from one or more of the lead sets to the implantable internal controller.
