  • a) identifying the individual as being at risk for side effects resulting from transfusion with a blood product, using a method comprising;

    i) determining the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) value of body fluid from an individual to be transfused, and, comparing the determined ORP value with the ORP value of a corresponding body fluid from a normal subject; and

    ,ii) identifying the individual as being at risk for transfusion-related side effects, when the determined ORP value is significantly higher than the ORP value of the body fluid from the normal subject; and

    ,b) transfusing the individual with a blood product containing a level of oxidative species that is lower than the level of oxidant species in the body fluid from the individual.
