Abstract

The invention comprises a method and apparatus for slowing positively charged particles, comprising the steps of: (1) transporting the positively charged particles from an accelerator, along a beam transport line, and into a nozzle system; (2) placing a first liquid in a first chamber in a beam path of the positively charged particles; (3) placing a second liquid in a second chamber in the beam path of the positively charged particles; (4) moving the first and second chamber with the nozzle system; (5) slowing the positively charged particles using the first liquid and the second liquid; (6) moving the first chamber in a first direction to yield a longer first pathlength of the positively charged particles through the first chamber; and (7) moving the second chamber opposite the first direction to yield a longer second pathlength of the positively charged particles through the second chamber.

Claims

1. An apparatus for reducing positively charged particles, comprising:

an accelerator configured to deliver the positively charged particles along a beam transport line into a nozzle system, said nozzle system comprising;

a first chamber configured to hold a first liquid in a beam path of the positively charged particles;

a second chamber configured to hold a second liquid in the beam path of the positively charged particles; and

a computer controlled motor configured to move said first chamber and said second chamber with said nozzle system,

wherein the first liquid and the second liquid reduce the kinetic energy of the positively charged particles during use.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a first beam path, comprising a first pathlength, from a beam entrance side of said first chamber to a beam exit side of said first chamber; and

a second beam path, comprising a second pathlength, from an incident side of said second chamber to an egress side of said second chamber.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising:

a common fluid reserve tank connected with a manifold to said first chamber and said second chamber.

4. The apparatus of claim 2, said nozzle system further comprising:

a first angle between a first incident line segment of the positively charged particles and said beam entrance side of said first chamber of opposite sign and equal magnitude to a second angle of a second incident line segment of the positively charged particles and said incident side of said second chamber, during use.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, said first chamber and said second chamber comprising a common shape between, respective, two sides interacting with the positively charged particles, said common shape of said second chamber rotated one hundred eighty degrees relative to said first chamber.

6. The apparatus of claim 4, further comprising:

a detector, movable along a z-axis between said entrance side and said exit side of said first chamber, responsive to state of the positively charged particles.

7. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising:

a main controller linked to a radiation treatment plan, said main controller configured to direct movement of said first chamber.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising:

a gas handling system configured to;

(1) deliver a gas to the first chamber upon removal of the first fluid from said first chamber and (2) recover the gas upon subsequent displacement of the gas in the first chamber by the first fluid.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising:

a first ion strip detector integrated with said entrance side of said first chamber; and

a second ion strip detector integrated with said egress side of said second chamber.

10. A method for slowing positively charged particles, comprising the steps of:

transporting the positively charged particles from an accelerator, along a beam transport line, and into a nozzle system;

placing a first liquid in a first chamber and in a beam path of the positively charged particles;

placing a second liquid in a second chamber and in the beam path of the positively charged particles;

moving, with a motor under computer control, said first chamber and said second chamber with said nozzle system; and

slowing the positively charged particles using the first liquid and the second liquid.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the steps of:

moving said first chamber in a first direction to yield a longer first pathlength of the positively charged particles through said first chamber; and

moving said second chamber opposite the first direction to yield a longer second pathlength of the positively charged particles through said second chamber.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of:

axially moving the first chamber relative to a reference line to alter a pathlength of the positively charged particles through the first liquid as a function of treatment time of a cancer.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the steps of:

offsetting an incident direction of the positively charged particles to an offset beam path using said first chamber; and

correcting the offset beam path back to a continuation line segment of the incident direction of the positively charged particles using said second chamber.

14. The method of claim 10, further comprising the steps of:

offsetting the positively charged particles, from an original x/y-position at a first z-axis point, to an offset x/y-position at an intermediate z-axis point, using said first chamber; and

re-centering the positively charged particles to the original x/y position at a second z-axis point using said second chamber,

wherein a z-axis passes through the first z-axis point and the second z-axis point,

wherein an x-axis and a y-axis, used to define an x/y-position, and the z-axis form a 3-dimensional coordinate system.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

maintaining equal pathlengths, of the positively charged particles, through said first chamber and said second chamber while moving said first chamber and said second chamber in opposite directions, which co-changes the equal pathlengths.

16. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of:

moving said first chamber to alter a kinetic energy of the positively charged particles.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:

determining a state of the positively charged particles using a detector, responsive to the positively charged particles, positioned in said first chamber.

18. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of:

dissipating radiation of the first fluid using an exchange of the first fluid in said first chamber and the first fluid in a dilution chamber.
