Abstract

A biosensor identifies a blood type using photoplethysmography (PPG) technology. A PPG circuit obtains a plurality of spectral responses at a plurality of wavelengths detected from skin of a user. A processing circuit determines a blood factor indicator using the plurality of spectral responses. The blood factor indicator may include a signal quality parameter or a ratio R value. A calibration database includes a correlation of the blood factor indicator to a plurality of blood types. The blood blood type of the user is identified using the blood factor indicator and the calibration database.

Claims

1. A biosensor, comprising:

a photoplethysmography (PPG) circuit configured to obtain a plurality of spectral responses at a plurality of wavelengths detected from skin of a user;

a processing circuit configured to;

determine a first ratio R value using a first spectral response and a second spectral response of the plurality of spectral responses, wherein the first ratio R value is determined from a ratio of alternating current (AC) signal components in the first spectral response and the second spectral response and varies based on one or more of a plurality of types of antigens on surfaces of red blood cells in a blood stream of the user;

access a calibration database stored in a memory that associates predetermined ratio R values to the plurality of types of antigens on the surfaces of red blood cells; and

identify a blood type of the user using the first ratio R value and the calibration database.

2. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of types of antigens corresponds to a blood type.

3. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

determine a second ratio R value using a third spectral response and a fourth spectral response of the plurality of spectral responses;

access the calibration database that associates the predetermined ratio R values to the plurality of types of antigens on the surfaces of red blood cells; and

identify the blood type of the user using the first ratio R value, the second ratio R value and the calibration database.

4. The biosensor of claim 3, wherein the first spectral response is obtained at a first wavelength at approximately 530 nm or in a range of 510 to 550 nm;

and

wherein the second spectral response is obtained at a wavelength of approximately 590 nm or in a range of 570 nm to 610 nm.

5. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

determine a signal quality parameter of a PPG signal in at least one spectral response of the plurality of spectral responses;

access the calibration database that includes a correlation of predetermined values of the signal quality parameter with the plurality of types of antigens on the surfaces of red blood cells; and

identify the blood type of the user using the signal quality parameter and the calibration database.

6. The biosensor of claim 5, wherein the signal quality parameter includes one or more of:

an auto-correlation using the PPG signal, a cross-correlation using the PPG signal or a signal to noise ratio of the PPG signal.

7. The biosensor of claim 6, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

change a state of a gain controller, wherein the gain controller is configured to control a gain applied to the PPG signal in the at least one spectral response of the plurality of spectral responses.

8. The biosensor of claim 7, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

apply a uniform gain to the PPG signal for detecting the signal quality parameter.

9. The biosensor of claim 5, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

compare the blood type identified using the first ratio R value and the calibration database to the blood type identified using the signal quality parameter.

10. The biosensor of claim 9, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

indicate an error when the blood type identified using the first ratio R value and the calibration database is not the same as the blood type identified using the signal quality parameter.

11. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

compare the first ratio R value to a normal range for the user;

determine the first ratio R value exceeds a predetermined threshold; and

generate an alert that an abnormal condition is detected.

12. The biosensor of claim 1, the processing circuit is configured to determine the first ratio R value using a first spectral response and a second spectral response of the plurality of spectral responses, by:

obtaining a value L<sub>λ

1</sub> using the first spectral response of the plurality of spectral responses, wherein the value L<sub>λ

1</sub> isolates the AC signal component of the first spectral response due to pulsating blood flow;

obtaining a value L<sub>λ

2</sub> using the second spectral response of the plurality of spectral responses, wherein the value L<sub>λ

2</sub> isolates the AC signal component of the second spectral response due to pulsating blood flow; and

obtaining the value R<sub>λ

1, λ

2</sub> from a ratio of the value L<sub>λ

1</sub> and the value L<sub>λ

2</sub>.

13. A biosensor, comprising:

a photoplethysmography (PPG) circuit configured to obtain a plurality of spectral responses at a plurality of wavelengths detected from skin of a user;

a processing circuit configured to;

determine a signal quality parameter of at least one of the plurality of spectral responses;

determine a blood factor indicator using the signal quality parameter;

access a calibration database that associates the blood factor indicator to a plurality of blood types; and

identify a blood type of the user using the blood factor indicator and the calibration database.

14. The biosensor of claim 13, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

obtain another blood factor indicator from a ratio R value, wherein the ratio R value is determined using AC signal components of a first spectral response and a second spectral response of the plurality of spectral responses;

access the calibration database that associates predetermined ratio R values to the plurality of blood types; and

obtain a second identification of the blood type of the user.

15. The biosensor of claim 14, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to determine a blood factor indicator using the signal quality parameter by:

comparing the signal quality parameter of the PPG signal to predetermined values of the signal quality parameter in the calibration table for one or more blood types.

16. The biosensor of claim 15, wherein the signal quality parameter includes one or more of:

an auto-correlation using the PPG signal, a cross-correlation using the PPG signal or a signal to noise ratio of the PPG signal.

17. The biosensor of claim 15, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

change a state of a gain controller, wherein the gain controller is configured to control a gain applied to the PPG signal in the at least one spectral response of the plurality of spectral responses.

18. The biosensor of claim 13, wherein the biosensor is implemented within a user device or communicates with a user device.

19. The biosensor of claim 13, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

compare the blood factor indicator to a normal range of the blood factor indicator for the user;

determine the blood factor indicator exceeds a predetermined threshold; and

generate an alert that an abnormal condition is detected.
