Abstract

A system for controlling delivery of ablation energy by an ablation catheter to tissue in a body is provided. The system includes an electronic control unit configured to determine, responsive to a measurement signal from the ablation catheter, a value for a characteristic associated with the delivery of ablation energy to the tissue. In one embodiment, the characteristic is the degree of contact between the ablation catheter and the tissue. The unit is further configured to generate a control signal, responsive to the determined value of the characteristic, to control an amount of energy delivered from an ablation delivery element on the ablation catheter to the tissue. The amount of energy varies in response to the determined value of the characteristic when the determined value of the characteristic meets a predetermined condition relative to a threshold value for the characteristic.

Claims

1. A method for controlling delivery of energy to an electrode, comprising:

delivering an amount of energy to the electrode;

receiving, with a processor, a measurement signal indicative of a first characteristic associated with delivery of the amount of energy to the electrode; and

varying the amount of energy based on the measurement signal.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the method includes implementing a closed-loop feedback method for varying the amount of energy.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving the measurement signal from a catheter that includes the electrode; and

generating a control signal from the measurement signal.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising providing the control signal to a generator, the control signal being configured to cause the generator to vary the amount of energy.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising causing a generator to vary the amount of energy in response to the measurement signal meeting a determined condition relative to a threshold value.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising causing a generator to continuously vary the amount of energy in response to the measurement signal meeting a determined condition relative to a threshold value.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising causing a generator to continuously vary the amount of energy in response to a change in the measurement signal when a value of the measurement signal is between a first threshold value and a second threshold value.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein delivering the amount of energy to the electrode includes causing a generator to generate the amount of energy, the generator being configured to deliver the amount of energy to the electrode.

9. A system for controlling delivery of energy to an electrode, the system comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium coupled with the processor, the non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions executable by the processor to;

cause a generator to deliver an amount of energy to an electrode disposed on a catheter;

receive a measurement signal from a sensor;

generate a control signal based on the measurement signal meeting a determined condition relative to a threshold value; and

send the control signal to the generator, the control signal being configured to cause the generator to vary the amount of energy.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the sensor is a tactile contact sensor.

11. The system of claim 9, wherein the sensor is a force contact sensor.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the sensor is a capacitance sensor that generates the measurement signal, which is indicative of a change in capacitance resulting from application of force.

13. The system of claim 9, wherein the sensor is a piezoelectric sensor that includes a piezoelectric material and generates a signal indicative of a change in voltage resulting from placing the piezoelectric material under stress.

14. The system of claim 9, wherein the sensor is a pressure sensitive conductive composite sensor that includes a pressure sensitive composite, wherein the electrical resistance of the pressure sensitive composite varies inversely in proportion to the pressure that is applied to the pressure sensitive composite.

15. The system of claim 9, wherein the sensor includes a pair of optically interactive elements configured to emit and receive light energy from the electromagnetic spectrum.

16. The system of claim 9, further comprising instructions executable to determine, based on the measurement signal from the sensor, a value for a characteristic associated with delivery of the amount of energy to the electrode.

17. A medical device, comprising:

an elongated body, the elongated body including a proximal portion and a distal portion;

an electrode disposed along the distal portion of the elongated body;

the medical device being configured to;

deliver an amount of energy to the electrode;

receive a measurement signal from the electrode, the measurement signal being indicative of an electrical coupling index between the electrode and a tissue of a body; and

vary the amount of energy based on the electrical coupling index.

18. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the electrical coupling index is determined based on a complex impedance between the electrode and the tissue.

19. The medical device of claim 18, wherein a component of the complex impedance is selected from at least one of a resistance between the electrode and the tissue and a reactance between the electrode and the tissue.

20. The medical device of claim 18, wherein a component of the complex impedance is selected from at least one of an impedance magnitude between the electrode and the tissue and an impedance phase angle between the electrode and the tissue.

21. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the electrical coupling index is indicative of a degree of contact between the electrode and the tissue.
