1. A vehicular vision system comprising:
- a rearview video camera at a rear portion of a vehicle;
a video processor operable to process video image data captured by said rearview video camera, wherein said video image data comprises at least a left zone image data set, a middle zone image data set and a right zone image data set;
wherein said left zone image data set comprises image data captured by said rearview video camera of a left zone that encompasses where another vehicle may at least one of (i) approach from the rear of the equipped vehicle in a left side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle and (ii) overtake the equipped vehicle in a left side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle;
wherein said right zone image data set comprises image data captured by said rearview video camera of a right zone that encompasses where another vehicle may at least one of (i) approach from the rear of the equipped vehicle in a right side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle and (ii) overtake the equipped vehicle in a right side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle;
wherein said middle zone image data set comprises image data captured by said rearview video camera of a middle zone between the left and right zones that encompasses a road lane being traveled on by the equipped vehicle, and wherein the middle lane is disposed between the left side lane and the right side lane;
a single video display screen for displaying video images;
wherein said single video display screen comprises a left display region at a left portion of said single video display screen and a right display region at a right portion of said single video display screen;
wherein said single video display screen comprises a middle display region between said left display region and said right display region;
wherein said left display region, said middle display region and said right display region comprise separate portions of said single video display screen;
wherein said single video display screen is operable to use said left display region to display video images derived from said left zone image data set, is operable to use said middle display region to display video images derived from said middle zone image data set, and is operable to use said right display region to display video images derived from said right zone image data set;
wherein said single video display screen is operable to display video images at said left display region of said single video display screen that are derived from said left zone image data set captured by said rearview video camera in order to display video images representative of the scene occurring at the left side lane at the left side of the equipped vehicle responsive to at least one of (a) actuation of a left turn signal indicator of the equipped vehicle, (b) detection of another vehicle in or approaching the left side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle and (c) a lane departure warning system of the equipped vehicle;
wherein, when said single video display screen is displaying video images at said left display region that are derived from said left zone image data, said single video display screen does not display video images representative of said right zone image data at said right display region;
wherein said single video display screen is operable to display video images at said right display region of said single video display screen that are derived from said right zone image data set captured by said rearview video camera in order to display video images representative of the scene occurring at the right side lane at the right side of the equipped vehicle responsive to at least one of (a) actuation of a right turn signal indicator of the equipped vehicle, (b) detection of another vehicle in or approaching the right side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle and (c) a lane departure warning system of the equipped vehicle; and
wherein, when said single video display screen is displaying video images at said right display region that are representative of said right zone image data, said single video display screen does not display video images representative of said left zone image data at said left display region.

Abstract
A vehicular vision system includes a rearview video camera and a video processor operable to process captured video image data that includes at least a left zone image data set, a middle zone image data set and a right zone image data set. A single video display screen displays video images and includes a left display region at a left portion, a right display region at a right portion, and a middle display region between the left and right display regions. The display screen is operable to use each display region to display video images derived from the respective zone image data set. When the display screen is displaying video images at the right or left display region that are derived from the respective zone image data, the single video display screen does not display video images representative of the other zone image data at the other display region.

a rearview video camera at a rear portion of a vehicle; a video processor operable to process video image data captured by said rearview video camera, wherein said video image data comprises at least a left zone image data set, a middle zone image data set and a right zone image data set; wherein said left zone image data set comprises image data captured by said rearview video camera of a left zone that encompasses where another vehicle may at least one of (i) approach from the rear of the equipped vehicle in a left side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle and (ii) overtake the equipped vehicle in a left side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle; wherein said right zone image data set comprises image data captured by said rearview video camera of a right zone that encompasses where another vehicle may at least one of (i) approach from the rear of the equipped vehicle in a right side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle and (ii) overtake the equipped vehicle in a right side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle; wherein said middle zone image data set comprises image data captured by said rearview video camera of a middle zone between the left and right zones that encompasses a road lane being traveled on by the equipped vehicle, and wherein the middle lane is disposed between the left side lane and the right side lane; a single video display screen for displaying video images; wherein said single video display screen comprises a left display region at a left portion of said single video display screen and a right display region at a right portion of said single video display screen; wherein said single video display screen comprises a middle display region between said left display region and said right display region; wherein said left display region, said middle display region and said right display region comprise separate portions of said single video display screen; wherein said single video display screen is operable to use said left display region to display video images derived from said left zone image data set, is operable to use said middle display region to display video images derived from said middle zone image data set, and is operable to use said right display region to display video images derived from said right zone image data set; wherein said single video display screen is operable to display video images at said left display region of said single video display screen that are derived from said left zone image data set captured by said rearview video camera in order to display video images representative of the scene occurring at the left side lane at the left side of the equipped vehicle responsive to detection of another vehicle in or approaching the left side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle, and wherein detection of said other vehicle is via at least one of (a) machine vision sensing, (b) radar sensing, (c) ultrasonic sensing, (d) time of flight infrared sensing and (e) time of flight infrared sensing; wherein, when said single video display screen is displaying video images at said left display region that are derived from said left zone image data, said single video display screen does not display video images representative of said right zone image data at said right display region; wherein said single video display screen is operable to display video images at said right display region of said single video display screen that are derived from said right zone image data set captured by said rearview video camera in order to display video images representative of the scene occurring at the right side lane at the right side of the equipped vehicle responsive to detection of another vehicle in or approaching the right side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle, and wherein detection of said other vehicle is via at least one of (a) machine vision sensing, (b) radar sensing, (c) ultrasonic sensing, (d) time of flight sensing and (e) time of flight infrared sensing; and wherein, when said single video display screen is displaying video images at said right display region that are representative of said right zone image data, said single video display screen does not display video images representative of said left zone image data at said left display region. - View Dependent Claims (27, 28, 29)

wherein said right zone image data set comprises image data captured by said rearview video camera of a right zone that encompasses where another vehicle may at least one of (i) approach from the rear of the equipped vehicle in a right side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle and (ii) overtake the equipped vehicle in a right side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle; wherein said middle zone image data set comprises image data captured by said rearview video camera of a middle zone between the left and right zones that encompasses a road lane being traveled on by the equipped vehicle, and wherein the middle lane is disposed between the left side lane and the right side lane; a single video display screen for displaying video images; wherein said single video display screen comprises a left display region at a left portion of said single video display screen and a right display region at a right portion of said single video display screen; wherein said single video display screen comprises a middle display region between said left display region and said right display region; wherein said left display region, said middle display region and said right display region comprise separate portions of said single video display screen; wherein said single video display screen is operable to use said left display region to display video images derived from said left zone image data set, is operable to use said middle display region to display video images derived from said middle zone image data set, and is operable to use said right display region to display video images derived from said right zone image data set; wherein said rearview video camera comprises a rear backup camera, and wherein, during backup maneuvering of the equipped vehicle, said single video display screen uses said left display region to display video images derived from said left zone image data set, uses said middle display region to display video images derived from said middle zone image data set, and uses said right display region to display video images derived from said right zone image data set; wherein, when the equipped vehicle is not executing a backup maneuver, said single video display screen is operable to display video images at said left display region of said single video display screen that are derived from said left zone image data set captured by said rearview video camera in order to display video images representative of the scene occurring at the left side lane at the left side of the equipped vehicle responsive to detection of another vehicle in or approaching the left side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle, and wherein detection of said other vehicle is via at least one of (a) machine vision sensing and (b) radar sensing; wherein, when said single video display screen is displaying video images at said left display region that are derived from said left zone image data when the equipped vehicle is not executing a backup maneuver, said single video display screen does not display video images representative of said right zone image data at said right display region; wherein, when the equipped vehicle is not executing a backup maneuver, said single video display screen is operable to display video images at said right display region of said single video display screen that are derived from said right zone image data set captured by said rearview video camera in order to display video images representative of the scene occurring at the right side lane at the right side of the equipped vehicle responsive to detection of another vehicle in or approaching the right side lane adjacent to the equipped vehicle, and wherein detection of said other vehicle is via at least one of a) machine vision sensing and (b) radar sensing; wherein, when said single video display screen is displaying video images at said right display region that are representative of said right zone image data when the equipped vehicle is not executing a backup maneuver, said single video display screen does not display video images representative of said left zone image data at said left display region; wherein said single video display screen comprises a reconfigurable thin film transistor liquid crystal screen that is backlit by at least one white light-emitting light emitting diode; wherein said backlit liquid crystal display screen comprises at least 85,000 individually addressable pixels; and wherein, when said single video display screen is operating to display video images, said single video display screen provides a contrast ratio of greater than 650;
