1. A retractable vehicle step comprising:
- a stepping platform defining a stepping surface;
a mounting bracket configured to be attached to a vehicle;
a plurality of support linkages, the plurality of support linkages configured to pivotably move the stepping platform between a retracted position and an extended position, wherein at least two of the plurality of support linkages are non-parallel; and
a stepping platform linkage connected to the stepping platform and the at least two of the plurality of support linkages, the stepping platform linkage having a straddling segment located on a first end opposite the stepping platform, wherein the straddling segment comprises a pair of spaced apart flanges;
wherein the stepping platform has a width substantially greater than the width of any of the plurality of support linkages and the stepping platform linkage;
wherein the retractable vehicle step has at least 4 axes of rotation, a first axis and a second axis of which are located on the mounting bracket and a third axis and a fourth axis of which are located on the stepping platform linkage within the straddling segment;
the at least two of the plurality of support linkages comprising a first arm and a second arm, the first arm defining an inboard face and an outboard face, a maximum distance between the inboard face and the outboard face defining a first thickness, the first arm defining a first side and a second side, a maximum distance between the first side and the second side defining a first width, the first width being substantially greater than the first thickness, the pair of spaced apart flanges cooperatively straddle and support a first end of the first arm; and
wherein the stepping platform is configured to move downwards and outboard when moving from the retracted position to the extended position, wherein the second arm is supported by and pivotable with respect to the mounting bracket, and a first end of the second arm is spaced downward from the mounting bracket when the stepping platform is in the extended position, and wherein further placement of a load upon the stepping surface when the stepping platform is in the extended position urges the stepping platform away from the retracted position.

Abstract
A retractable step for use with a vehicle comprises a stepping member having an upper stepping surface, a first arm, and a second arm. The first arm has a first end pivotally attached to the vehicle, and a second end pivotally attached to the stepping member. The second arm also has a first end pivotally attached to the vehicle, and a second end pivotally attached to the stepping member. The first and second arms can be generally planar linkages.
