End effector coupling arrangements for a surgical cutting and stapling instrument
First Claim
1. A disposable loading unit for use with a surgical stapling instrument, said disposable loading unit comprising:
- a shaft portion comprising a proximal end, wherein said proximal end comprises a bayonet connection which is rotated to operably connect said disposable loading unit with the surgical stapling instrument;
a selectively replaceable first jaw, comprising;
a cartridge body comprising a plurality of staple cavities;
a plurality of staples removably stored in said staple cavities;
staple drivers configured to eject said staples from said staple cavities; and
a retainer extending around a bottom portion of said cartridge body configured to prevent said staple drivers from falling out of said cartridge body through said bottom portion, wherein said replaceable first jaw extends around a bottom portion of said retainer such that said retainer is positioned intermediate said cartridge body and said replaceable first jaw;
a second jaw comprising an anvil configured to deform said staples;
a firing member configured to eject said staples from said staple cavities during a firing stroke of said firing member, wherein said selectively replaceable first jaw can be replaced after said firing stroke without having to replace the entirety of said disposable loading unit, and wherein said firing member is further configured to deploy staples from another selectively replaceable first jaw with which said selectively replaceable first jaw is replaced; and
a lockout configured to selectively prevent said firing member from being advanced through said firing stroke when said disposable loading unit is in a clamped configuration.

Abstract
In various embodiments, a surgical stapling instrument can include a handle, a shaft extending from the handle, wherein the shaft defines an axis, and a disposable loading unit which is assembled to the shaft in a direction which is transverse to the shaft axis. Such a connection between the disposable loading unit and the shaft can prevent, or at least inhibit, the disposable loading unit from being unintentionally displaced proximally and/or distally relative to the shaft of the surgical instrument. The surgical stapling instrument and/or disposable loading unit can further include a threaded collar and/or detent assembly configured to hold the disposable loading unit in place. In various embodiments, a disposable loading unit can include a lockout feature which can prevent, or at least inhibit, an expended disposable loading unit from being reassembled to the elongated body of the surgical instrument.
