1. A syringe, comprising:

  • a syringe body comprising a sidewall defining a longitudinal axis, wherein at least a portion of the sidewall is configured to propagate electromagnetic energy emitted from an electromagnetic source incident on the sidewall by internal reflection in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis; and

    at least one indicator recessed radially into an outer surface of the sidewall,wherein the at least one indicator is adapted to reflect at least a portion of the electromagnetic energy radially from the sidewall such that the reflected energy is detectable by a sensor to provide information about one or more parameters.
