1. An electronic device comprising:

  • an electrically conductive housing;

    an array of electromagnetic bandgap structures beneath the housing that directs current flow on the housing;

    wireless transceiver circuitry,wherein one or more regions within the array form stop band regions,wherein one or more regions within the array form pass band regions,wherein current carrying regions on the housing are defined by the pass band regions,wherein non-current carrying regions on the housing are defined by the stop band regions, wherein at least some of the current carrying regions and the non-current carrying regions cause a portion of the electrically conductive housing to operate as a radiating element of an antenna and to be coupled with the wireless transceiver circuitry; and

    a printed circuit board (PCB) carried by the housing and mounting the wireless transceiver circuitry,wherein the PCB and the housing are positioned to define a gap therebetween and are electrically connected by way of a metal via,wherein each of the electromagnetic bandgap structures includes a shunt component and a plurality of series components that connect to series components of other electromagnetic bandgap structures of the array,wherein the shunt component and the plurality of series components are formed on the PCB.
