Abstract

Systems of techniques for controlling charge flow during the electrical stimulation of tissue. In one aspect, a method includes receiving a charge setting describing an amount of charge that is to flow during a stimulation pulse that electrically stimulates a tissue, and generating and delivering the stimulation pulse in a manner such that an amount of charge delivered to the tissue during the stimulation pulse accords with the charge setting.

Claims

1. An implantable medical device, comprising:

a waveform generator configured to generate a stimulation pulse and to deliver the stimulation pulse to a patient'"'"'s tissue through one or more electrodes; and

a coulomb counter configured to;

receive a charge setting value that is expressed in terms of electrical charge;

measure an amount of electrical charge delivered to the patient'"'"'s tissue by the stimulation pulse by measuring an electrical parameter along a conductive path between the waveform generator and the one or more electrodes; and

generate a control signal to cause the waveform generator to cease delivery of the stimulation pulse when the measured amount of electrical charge equals the charge setting value.

2. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein each of the one or more electrodes is connected to the waveform generator by a conductive lead.

3. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the electrical parameter is a voltage drop across a resistance along the conductive path.

4. The implantable medical device of claim 1, further comprising a data receiver configured to receive an initial charge setting value from an external controller.

5. The implantable medical device of claim 4, wherein the data receiver is coupled to the coulomb counter via a data path.

6. The implantable medical device of claim 5, wherein the data path comprises a memory.

7. The implantable medical device of claim 4, wherein the initial charge setting value is an absolute value.

8. The implantable medical device of claim 4, wherein the initial charge setting value is an incremental or decremental value.

9. The implantable medical device of claim 8, wherein the initial charge setting value is converted to the charge setting value.

10. An implantable medical device system, comprising:

an external controller configured to receive a charge setting value that is expressed in terms of electrical charge from a user; and

an implantable medical device comprising;

a waveform generator configured to generate a stimulation pulse and to deliver the stimulation pulse to a patient'"'"'s tissue through one or more electrodes;

a data receiver configured to receive the charge setting value from the external controller; and

a coulomb counter configured to;

receive the charge setting value from the data receiver;

measure an amount of electrical charge delivered to the patient'"'"'s tissue by the stimulation pulse by measuring an electrical parameter along a conductive path between the waveform generator and the one or more electrodes; and

generate a control signal to cause the waveform generator to cease delivery of the stimulation pulse when the measured amount of electrical charge equals the charge setting value.

11. The implantable medical device system of claim 10, wherein each of the one or more electrodes is connected to the waveform generator by a conductive lead.

12. The implantable medical device system of claim 10, wherein the electrical parameter is a voltage drop across a resistance along the conductive path.

13. The implantable medical device system of claim 10, wherein the implantable medical device further comprises a data receiver configured to receive the charge setting value from the external controller.

14. The implantable medical device system of claim 13, wherein the data receiver is coupled to the coulomb counter via a data path.

15. The implantable medical device system of claim 14, wherein the data path comprises a memory.

16. The implantable medical device system of claim 13, wherein the charge setting value is an absolute value.

17. The implantable medical device system of claim 13, wherein the charge setting value is an incremental or decremental value.

18. The implantable medical device system of claim 17, wherein the charge setting value is converted to an absolute value.
