Abstract

An inductive power transfer system comprises a primary unit operable to generate an electromagnetic field and at least one secondary device, separable from the primary unit, and adapted to couple with the field when the secondary device is in proximity to the primary unit so that power can be received inductively by the secondary device from the primary unit without direct electrical conductive contacts therebetween. The system detects if there is a substantial difference between, on the one hand, a power drawn from the primary unit and, on the other hand, a power required by the secondary device or, if there is more than one secondary device, a combined power required by the secondary devices. Following such detection, the system restricts or stops the inductive power supply from the primary unit. Such a system can detect the presence of unwanted parasitic loads in the vicinity of the primary unit reliably.

Claims

1. A method of controlling inductive power transfer in an inductive power transfer system, the system including a primary unit operable to generate an electromagnetic field and a secondary device, separate from the primary unit, and adapted to couple with the field when the secondary device is in proximity to the primary unit so that power is received inductively by the secondary device from the primary unit without direct electrical conductive contacts therebetween, the method comprising:

measuring a characteristic of a secondary power in the secondary device, the secondary power based on power received inductively from the primary unit;

generating power requirement information representative of the measured characteristic of power and a parasitic load of the secondary device; and

transmitting the power requirement information to the primary unit.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving, in the primary unit, the power requirement information of the secondary device;

measuring, in the primary unit, a characteristic of power drawn from the primary unit;

determining a foreign object is present proximity to the primary unit in addition to the secondary device based on a) the measured characteristic of power drawn from primary unit and b) the power requirement information representative of the secondary power and the parasitic load of the secondary device; and

following such determination, restricting or stopping the inductive power supply from the primary unit.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the characteristic of the secondary power is at least one of a current and a voltage supplied to the load.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the power requirement information represents the amount of power used by the secondary device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the inductive power supply is restricted or stopped in the event that the measured primary power is greater than a threshold value.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the power requirement information represents a sum of the measured secondary power and the parasitic load of the secondary unit.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the inductive power supply from the primary unit is restricted or stopped in dependence upon a difference between the measured primary power and the sum of the measured secondary power and the parasitic load of the secondary unit.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the inductive power supply is restricted or stopped in the event that the measured primary power exceeds the sum by more than a threshold value.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the secondary device transmits the power requirement information to the primary unit using a communication link that is separate from an inductive power transfer link between the primary unit and the secondary device concerned.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the each secondary device transmits the power requirement information to the primary unit by varying a load imposed by the secondary device on the primary unit.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the load is varied to amplitude modulate or to pulse width modulate transmission of the power requirement information to the primary unit.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the power requirement information is transmitted as a series of bits or symbols.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the load is a dummy load.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the power requirement information transmitted includes information relating to a parasitic load imposed on the primary unit by the secondary device.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the power requirement information generated from at least one secondary device is representative of a sum of an amount of power supplied to the secondary device concerned and a parasitic load imposed on the primary unit by the secondary device concerned.

16. An inductive power transfer system comprising:

a primary unit operable to generate an electromagnetic field;

a secondary device, separate from the primary unit, and adapted to couple with the field when the secondary device is in proximity to the primary unit so that power is received inductively by the secondary device from the primary unit without direct electrical conductive contacts therebetween;

a measuring unit for measuring a characteristic of secondary power in the secondary device; and

communication circuitry for receiving, in the primary unit, power requirement of the secondary device representative of the measured characteristic of secondary power and a parasitic load of the secondary device.

17. The inductive power transfer system of claim 16 further comprising:

power measuring circuitry configured to measure a power in the primary unit; and

a control unit for determining if there is a substantial difference between, on the one hand, the measured power in the primary unit and, on the other hand, the power requirement, wherein the control unit is operable, following such determination of a substantial difference, to restrict or stop the inductive power supply from the primary unit.

18. The inductive power transfer system of claim 16 wherein the information relating to the power requirement is the voltage or current supplied to a load of the secondary device.

19. The inductive power transfer system of claim 16 wherein the power requirement is an amount of power supplied to the secondary device.

20. The inductive power transfer system of claim 16 wherein the power measuring circuitry is operable to measure a power drawn from the primary unit.

21. The inductive power transfer system of claim 16 wherein the secondary device is adapted to transmit the power requirement by modulating a load imposed on the primary unit.

22. The inductive power transfer system of claim 21 wherein amplitude modulation or pulse width modulation are used to transmit the power requirement information to the primary unit.

23. A secondary device for receiving power inductively from a primary unit, the secondary unit comprising:

a secondary coil adapted to couple inductively with a primary coil of the primary unit when in proximity to the primary unit such that power is received inductively by the secondary unit without direct electrical conductive contacts therebetween;

a measuring unit for measuring a characteristic of secondary power in the secondary device; and

communication circuitry for transmitting, to the primary unit, power information, the power information being representative of the measured characteristic of secondary power and a parasitic load of the secondary device.

24. The secondary device of claim 23 wherein the power information is a power requirement of the secondary device and includes at least one of current and voltage supplied to the secondary device from the primary unit.

25. The secondary device of claim 23 wherein the communication circuitry employs a dummy load to communicate the power information.

26. The secondary device of claim 23 wherein the parasitic load is a friendly parasitic load of the secondary device imposed on the primary unit.

27. The secondary device of claim 23 wherein the power information is representative of a sum of the measured characteristic of secondary power and the parasitic load of the secondary device.

28. An inductive power supply comprising:

a primary unit operable to generate an electromagnetic field to supply power wirelessly to a secondary device, separate from the primary unit, and adapted to couple with the field when the secondary device is in proximity to the primary unit so that power is transmitted inductively from the primary unit to the secondary device without direct electrical conductive contacts therebetween;

power measuring circuitry configured to measure a power in the primary unit;

communication circuitry for receiving, in the primary unit, power information from the secondary device, wherein the power information is representative of a measured characteristic of secondary power in the secondary device and a parasitic load of the secondary device; and

a control unit for determining if there is a substantial difference between, on the one hand, the measured power in the primary unit and, on the other hand, the power information, wherein the control unit is operable, following such determination of a substantial difference, to restrict or stop the inductive power supply from the primary unit.

29. The inductive power transfer system of claim 28 wherein the information relating to the power requirement is the voltage or current supplied to a load of the secondary device.

30. The inductive power transfer system of claim 28 wherein the power requirement is an amount of power supplied to the secondary device.

31. The inductive power transfer system of claim 28 wherein the power measuring circuitry is operable to measure a power drawn from the primary unit.

32. The inductive power transfer system of claim 28 wherein amplitude modulation or pulse width modulation are used to transmit the power requirement information to the primary unit.
