1. An apparatus for collection of optical data, the apparatus comprising:

  • a source of light including at least one transmitter configured to emit a beam of first light at at least one corresponding wavelength along a first axis;

    a device includinga first set of selectively and individually re-orientable reflecting elements disposed parallel to a first plane when each of said reflecting elements from the first set is in a first reference orientation;

    a reflecting element from the first set configured to redirect the first light, received from said beam, towards a predetermined point,wherein the predetermined point is separate from the first set;

    an optical receiver disposed in optical communication with said device to receive second light, the second light being the first light that has been scattered at the predetermined point;

    anda computer-readable processor and tangible, non-transitory storage medium containing program code thereon which, when downloaded onto the processor, causes the processorto receive reference data representing an empirically-defined spectrally-dependent characteristic of an object present at said predetermined point;

    to determine an impulse response of the object, the impulse response being associated with emission of the first light by the source; and

    to determine, as a function of time, at least one of (i) a wavelength-dependent material parameter characterizing the object and (ii) a position-dependent parameter characterizing the object, based on the determined impulse response and the reference data.
