1. A stimulation system for automatically supplementing a voluntary muscle contraction with a muscle contraction caused by electrical stimulation, the system comprising:

  • an electrode assembly including at least one electrode configured to deliver electrical stimulation signals to a muscle of a user;

    a speaker;

    a sensor configured to detect contractions of the muscle; and

    a control system operably connected to the electrode assembly, the speaker and the sensor, the control system to implement a preprogrammed electrostimulation program comprising a resting phase and a voluntary contraction phrase, the control system configured to;

    during the resting phase, send an electrical test pulse through the at least one electrode to the muscle, the electrical test pulse configured to cause a muscle twitch;

    detect, with the sensor, a first signal indicative of the muscle twitch caused by the electrical test pulse during the resting phase;

    provide an auditory signal to the speaker to produce a sound signal to indicate a start of a voluntary contraction phase;

    during the voluntary contraction phase, detect, with the sensor, a voluntary contraction of the muscle by detecting a second signal different from the first signal, the second signal indicative of a voluntary muscle contraction; and

    responsive to detecting the voluntary contraction of the muscle, send an electrical stimulation signal through the at least one electrode to the muscle, the electrical stimulation signal configured to cause the muscle to contract such that the voluntary contraction and the electrical stimulation occur simultaneously during the voluntary contraction phase.
