Abstract

Glaucoma can be treated by implanting an intraocular shunt into the eye. Such procedures can employ various deployment devices, shunts, and implantation techniques.

Claims

1. A device for deploying an intraocular shunt, the device comprising:

a housing;

a sleeve coupled to the housing;

a needle (i) positioned at least partially within the sleeve and (ii) configured to hold an intraocular shunt;

a pusher component axially movable within the needle;

a retraction component configured to retract the needle inside the housing; and

a rotatable deployment portion configured to rotate in a first direction to sequentially move the pusher component and to continue rotation in the first direction to subsequently engage with and move the retraction component.

2. The device according to claim 1, wherein a distal portion of the housing is movable (i) relative to the pusher component, the retraction component, and the needle and (ii) between a distal position and a proximal position, the distal portion being biased toward the distal position.

3. The device according to claim 2, further comprising a member that limits axial retraction of the distal portion of the housing.

4. The device according to claim 2, wherein the distal portion further comprises a capsule, the capsule being at least partially within a proximal portion of the housing when the distal portion is in the proximal position.

5. The device according to claim 2, wherein a distal end of the needle extends distally from the sleeve when the distal portion is in the proximal position.

6. The device according to claim 1, further comprising an intraocular shunt that is at least partially disposed within the needle.

7. The device according to claim 6, wherein the pusher component is configured to push the shunt partially out of the needle, and the retraction component is configured to retract the needle relative to the shunt.

8. The device according to claim 1, further comprising at least one member that limits axial movement of the needle.

9. The device according to claim 1, further comprising an indicator mechanism formed on the housing that provides feedback to an operator as to a position of at least one of the pusher component or the retraction component.

10. The device according to claim 9, wherein the indicator mechanism comprises a slot, formed in and extending along the housing, for providing a visual indication of the position of at least one of the pusher component or the retraction component.

11. The device according to claim 1, wherein the rotatable deployment portion is configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the device in the first direction to sequentially move the pusher component and to continue rotation in the first direction to subsequently move the retraction component.

12. A device for deploying an intraocular shunt, the device comprising:

a housing comprising a sleeve, the sleeve comprising a distal contact surface that provides resistance against advancement of the device when the contact surface contacts anterior chamber angle tissue on an inside of an anterior chamber;

a deployment mechanism at least partially disposed within the housing; and

a needle coupled inside the housing to the deployment mechanism, wherein the needle is configured to hold an intraocular shunt;

wherein the device comprises an insertion configuration and a deployment configuration and, when the device is in the insertion configuration, the needle extends distally beyond the sleeve, and when the device is in the deployment configuration, the needle is fully disposed within the sleeve; and

wherein the deployment mechanism is configured to rotate in a first direction to sequentially push the shunt within the needle and to continue rotation in the first direction to subsequently engage with and retract the needle relative to the housing.

13. The device according to claim 12, wherein the contact surface comprises a radial protrusion.

14. The device according to claim 13, wherein the protrusion is formed integrally with a distal end of the sleeve.

15. The device according to claim 13, wherein the protrusion is formed separately from the sleeve and connected to a distal end of the sleeve.

16. The device according to claim 12, wherein the contact surface surrounds a distal end of the sleeve.

17. The device according to claim 12, wherein the contact surface extends around only a portion of the sleeve.

18. The device according to claim 12, wherein the contact surface comprises a collar that surrounds a distal end of the sleeve.

19. The device according to claim 12, wherein the deployment mechanism is configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the device in the first direction to sequentially push the shunt within the needle and to continue rotation in the first direction to subsequently retract the needle relative to the housing.

20. A device for deploying an intraocular shunt, the device comprising:

a housing comprising a sleeve;

a deployment mechanism at least partially disposed within the housing; and

a needle extending within the sleeve and coupled to the deployment mechanism, the needle being configured to hold an intraocular shunt, the needle being fully disposed within the sleeve when the shunt is released from the needle;

wherein the deployment mechanism is configured to rotate in a first direction to sequentially push the shunt within the needle and to continue rotation in the first direction to subsequently engage with and retract the needle relative to the housing.

21. The device according to claim 20, wherein the needle is fully disposed within the housing when the shunt is released from the needle.

22. The device according to claim 20, wherein the sleeve comprises a distal contact surface that provides resistance against advancement of the device when the contact surface contacts scleral tissue on an inside of an anterior chamber, the contact surface comprising a protrusion that comprises a flat bottom portion and an angled top portion.

23. The device according to claim 20, wherein the deployment mechanism is configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the device in the first direction to sequentially push the shunt within the needle and to continue rotation in the first direction to subsequently retract the needle relative to the housing.
