1. A method for locating an underground utility that emits an electromagnetic field generally coaxially about the underground utility within a signal range thereabout, from an excavation proximate the utility, the method comprising:
- disposing above ground a locator having a display, a plurality of first antennas, and circuitry in communication with the plurality of first antennas and the display, whereineach first antenna of the plurality of first antennas disposed in the locator so that the electromagnetic field induces a first signal in the first antenna that varies in a predetermined manner depending on a first spatial relationship between the first antenna and the utility, andthe locator circuitry is in communication with the plurality of first antennas so that the locator circuitry receives respective said first signals induced on the plurality of first antennas and drives the display to present a human detectable presentation corresponding to a characteristic of one or more said first signals induced on respective one or more of the plurality of first antennas;
providing a second antenna that is configured so that the electromagnetic field induces a second signal in the second antenna that varies in a predetermined manner depending on a second spatial relationship between the second antenna and the utility, wherein the second antenna is in communication with the locator circuitry so that the second antenna outputs to the locator circuitry a measurement signal corresponding to the second signal, wherein the locator circuitry is configured to drive the display to present a human detectable presentation corresponding to a characteristic of the measurement signal that varies with variation in the second spatial relationship; and
lowering the second antenna into the excavation and conveying the measurement signal to the locator until the presentation of the measurement signal characteristic indicates that the second antenna is at a predetermined spatial relationship with respect to the underground utility.

Abstract
A system for locating an underground utility that emits an electromagnetic signal comprises first and second receivers. The first receiver has electronics that respond to a spatial position of the first receiver with respect to the electromagnetic signal and therefore the utility. The second receiver is adapted for communication with the first receiver. The first receiver is configured for disposition within an underground excavation proximate to the utility.
