1. A method of testing a device under test (DUT) in a test system, comprisinginitiating exchange of an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) message pair between the DUT and the test system;
- anddetermining a backoff time selected by the DUT during the message exchange,wherein the backoff time is determined by;
tr=t3−
(t2+t2a+t2b),wherein tr is the backoff time, wherein t2 is a first received burst time point measured at the rising edge of a first received burst comprising an acknowledgement frame ACK receiving from DUT,wherein t3 is a second received burst time point measured at the rising edge of a second received burst comprising an ICMP message received from the DUT, wherein the second received burst follows the first received burst,wherein t2a is the burst duration of the acknowledgement frame ACK received from the DUT, andwherein t2b is a time span which indicates waiting for a distributed coordination function interframe space interval; and
providing to the DUT a carrier transmission such that it transmits after expiry of the determined tr.

Abstract
The invention relates to a technique for especially testing an IEEE 802.11 WLAN device, in particular for testing performance compliance of the device. According to a method aspect to be performed by a test system, exchange of an ICMP message pair is initiated between the device under test (DUT) and the test system; and a backoff time selected by the DUT during the message exchange is determined.

14. A computer program comprising program code portions stored on a non-transitory computer readable medium associated with a computing device of a test system for performing the following steps when the computer program is executed on one or more computing devices:
-
testing a device under test (DUT) in a test system, initiating exchange of an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) message pair between the DUT and the test system; and determining a backoff time selected by the DUT during the message exchange, wherein the backoff time is determined by;
tr=t3(t2+t2a+t2b),wherein tr is the backoff time, wherein t2 is a first received burst time point measured at the rising edge of a first received burst comprising an acknowledgement frame ACK received from the DUT, wherein t3 is a second received burst time point measured at the rising edge of a second received burst comprising an ICMP message received from the DUT, wherein the second received burst follows the first received burst, wherein t2a is a burst duration of the acknowledgement frame ACK received from the DUT, and wherein t2b is a time span which indicates waiting for a distributed coordination function interframe space interval; and providing to the DUT a carrier transmission such that it transmits after expiry of the determined tr.

15. A test system for testing a device under test (DUT)-comprising
a component adapted to initiate exchange of an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) message pair between the DUT and the test system; - and
a component adapted to determine a backoff time selected by the DUT during the message exchange, wherein the backoff time is determined by;
tr=t3−
(t2+t2a+t2b),wherein tr is the backoff time, wherein t2 is a first received burst time point measured at the rising edge of a first received burst comprising an acknowledgement frame ACK received from the DUT, wherein t3 is a second received burst time point measured at the rising edge of a second received burst comprising an ICMP message received from the DUT, wherein the second received burst follows the first received burst, wherein t2a is the burst duration of the acknowledgement frame ACK received from the DUT, and wherein t2b is a time span which indicates waiting for a distributed coordination function interframe space interval; and providing to the DUT a carrier transmission such that it transmits after expiry of the determined tr.
