1. An ophthalmic device for implantation in an eye, the ophthalmic device comprising:

  • an enclosure formed of a biocompatible material;

    control circuitry disposed in the enclosure and configured to sense a condition at the eye or to assist vision of the eye;

    wireless communication circuitry disposed in or on the enclosure, the wireless communication circuitry electrically coupled to the control circuitry, wherein the wireless communication circuitry includes;

    an optical receiver oriented to face a retina of the eye to detect first wireless signals from an external device outside of the eye after reflection off of the retina of the eye when the ophthalmic device is implanted into the eye, wherein the optical receiver is configured to detect the first wireless signals in an infrared band; and

    an optical transmitter oriented to face the retina of the eye when the ophthalmic device is implanted into the eye to emit second wireless signals for communicating with the external device outside of the eye via reflecting the second wireless signals off of the retina; and

    a dynamic optic positioned to assist vision of the eye when the ophthalmic device is implanted into the eye, wherein the dynamic optic is positioned to pass the first wireless signals incident into the eye prior to reflection off of the retina and pass the second wireless signals out of the eye after reflection off of the retina.
