Abstract

A needle-less injector device for delivering a dose of fluid intradermally, subcutaneously or intramuscularly to an animal or human. The device includes an inner housing having opposed ends. A syringe is disposed in one end of the inner housing. The syringe includes a nozzle for delivering a dose of fluid held within the syringe. A plunger is movably disposed within the syringe. A spring powered hammer is movably disposed within the inner housing. The hammer cooperates with the plunger to drive the dose of medicament from the nozzle. An injection delivery spring for powering the hammer is positioned and compressed between the other end of the inner housing and the spring powered hammer. An outer housing slideably supports the inner housing. A skin tensioning spring is mounted between the inner housing and the outer housing, the skin tensioning spring biasing the nozzle of the syringe against the animal or human. A trigger mechanism is disposed in the outer housing, the trigger mechanism cooperating with the spring powered hammer to release the injection delivery spring, wherein the size of the injection delivery spring and the length of the hammer dictate the amount of dose delivered and whether the dose is delivered intradermally, subcutaneously or intramuscularly to an animal or human.

Claims

1. A needle-less injector device comprising:

an inner housing;

an outer housing supporting the inner housing such that the inner housing is axially movable within the outer housing between a ready position and a firing position;

a tensioning spring between the inner housing and the outer housing, the tensioning spring biasing the inner housing towards the ready position;

a compressible coiled delivery spring within the inner housing, and

a hammer within the inner housing, wherein decompression of the compressible coiled delivery spring while the injector is in the firing position causes the delivery spring to move the hammer laterally within the inner housing.

2. The needle-less injector device of claim 1, further comprising a trigger, wherein actuation of the trigger will not cause an injection when the inner housing is in the ready position, and wherein actuation of the trigger will cause an injection when the inner housing is in the firing position.

3. The needle-less injector of claim 2, wherein actuation of the trigger when the inner housing is in the firing position releases the hammer and causes the delivery spring to move the hammer laterally within the inner housing.

4. The needle-less injector of claim 3 wherein the trigger is mounted to the inner housing and protrudes through an aperture in the outer housing.

5. The needle-less injector of claim 2 further comprising a protrusion extending from the outer housing to prevent actuation of the trigger if the inner housing is not in the firing position.

6. The needle-less injector of claim 2 wherein the tensioning spring is provided with a lesser stiffness than the delivery spring.

7. The needle-less injector of claim 2 wherein the tensioning spring and the delivery spring are disposed in series along an inner housing axis of movement.

8. The needle-less injector of claim 1 further comprising a removable needle-less syringe engaged with the inner housing, wherein the needle-less syringe comprises a nozzle at a syringe end away from the removal engagement with the inner housing.

The needle-less injector of claim 8 wherein the syringe comprises a skin tensioner operatively associated with the nozzle, said skin tensioner providing for a subject'"'"'s skin to be stretched across the skin tensioner when the nozzle is pressed against the subject'"'"'s skin, causing the inner housing to move from the ready position to the firing position against the force of the tensioning spring.

10. The needle-less injector of claim 9 wherein the skin tensioner comprises a disk positioned around the nozzle.

11. The needle-less injector device of claim 1, wherein the tensioning spring is selected during assembly of the needle-less injector device from a plurality of tensioning springs to provide a predetermined tensioning force.

12. The needle-less injector device of claim 2, wherein the delivery spring is selected during assembly of the needle-less injector device from a plurality of delivery springs to provide a predetermined injection force.

13. The needle-less injector device of claim 8, wherein the needle-less syringe is selected by a user of the needle-less injector device from a plurality of needle-less syringes to provide a predetermined injection volume.
