Indicators of text continuity
First Claim
1. A system for formatting text to assist a user in reading text, the system comprising:
- a display device;
one or more computers coupled to the display device and configured to perform operations comprising;
determining that one or more formatting settings stored on the one or more computers include an assistive setting that determines how one or more particular appearance attributes will be changed when formatting text for display on the display device;
receiving input text after the determining of the assistive setting;
formatting the input text according to the assistive setting to produce output text for display on the display device as successive lines of output text ending at respective line breaks, wherein the formatting includes setting attribute values for the output text according to the assistive setting so that the successive lines of output text all have a continuity of appearance with respect to the particular appearance attributes across the line breaks separating the lines of text, and so that the successive lines of output text all have no continuity of appearance with respect to the particular appearance attributes between respective adjacent beginning portions of successive lines of output text; and
presenting each formatted successive line of output text on the display device.

Abstract
Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media for graphically indicating text continuity. One method includes receiving text including a first line of text followed by a second line of text followed by a third line of text and selecting a distinct line beginning and line end of each of the first, second, and third lines of text. The method further includes formatting the text, including setting respective first attribute values for a first appearance attribute, so that, with respect to the first appearance attribute, the text has a continuity of visual appearance from the first line end to the second line beginning, and so that, with respect to the first appearance attribute, no continuity of visual appearance exists from the first line end to either the first line beginning or to the third line beginning, and presenting the formatted text on the output device.
