Abstract

A method for restricting unauthorized access to a patient'"'"'s diagnostic images is provided.

Claims

1. A method for restricting unauthorised access to an image of a patient'"'"'s diagnostic physiological medical record, the method including the following steps:

(a) storing patient identification data in a first database;

(b) storing a diagnostic image of a diagnostic physiological medical record associated with the patient in a second database, wherein the diagnostic image of the diagnostic physiological medical record is unique to the patient;

(c) generating by a processor an image derived key including a unique pixel sequence sample generated from a selection of graphical elements derived from the diagnostic image;

(d) assigning the patient with the image derived key;

(e) providing the image derived key to a user authorised by the patient or a person designated by the patient to authorise access to the diagnostic image;

(f) indexing each of the patient identification data stored in the first database and the diagnostic image stored in the second database by associating the image derived key with said each of the patient identification data and the diagnostic image; and

(g) securely retrieving, by a processor, the diagnostic image by matching the image derived key provided by the user authorised by the patient or the person designated by the patient to the indexed patient identification data and the indexed diagnostic image.

2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the first database is located on a portable storage medium.

3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the portable storage medium includes a smart card.

4. A method according to claim 2, wherein the image derived key is stored on the portable storage medium together with the patient identification data.

5. A method according to claim 1, wherein the second database is accessible to the authorized user over a network.

6. A method according to claim 1, wherein a region in the diagnostic image from which the unique pixel sequence sample is derived is indexed to ensure repeatability.

7. A method according to claim 6, wherein the region in the diagnostic image from which the unique pixel sequence sample is derived is indexed in a header of the image derived key.

A method according to claim 1, wherein extraction of the unique pixel sequence sample derived from the region of the diagnostic image includes a step of scanning the region for a minimum level of medical recording variation to ensure that the pixel sequence sample is unique to the diagnostic image.

9. A method according to claim 8, wherein the minimum level of physiological medical recording variation is associated with a low probability that the image derived key corresponds to another image.

10. A method according to claim 8, wherein the scanning the region for a minimum level of physiological medical recording variation is repeated in a new region of the diagnostic image.

11. A method according to claim 8, wherein the scanning the region for a minimum level of pixel variation is repeated when the minimum level of pixel variation is not met.

A method according to claim 1, further comprising dividing the diagnostic image into more than one segment and generating a physiological medical record image derived key for each of the diagnostic physiological medical record image segments, wherein more than one image derived key is generated for the entire image and the entire image is reconstructed only if a sequence of the more than one image derived key is provided in a predetermined order.

13. A method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of:

verifying the image derived key against the diagnostic image.

14. A system for restricting unauthorized access to an image of a patient'"'"'s diagnostic physiological medical record, the system including:

(a) a computer storage medium comprising a first database for storing patient identification data and a second database for storing a diagnostic image of a diagnostic physiological medical record associated with the patient, wherein the diagnostic image of the diagnostic physiological medical record is unique to the patient;

(b) a computer processor for generating an image derived key including a unique pixel sequence sample generated from a selection of graphical elements from the diagnostic image;

(c) a transmission component for providing the image derived key to a user authorized by the patient or person designated by the patient to authorise access to the diagnostic image;

(d) an indexing component for indexing each of the patient identification data stored in the first database and the diagnostic image stored in the second database by associating the image derived key with said each of the patient identification data and the diagnostic image; and

(e) an image matching processor for securely retrieving the diagnostic image by matching the image derived key provided by the user authorised by the patient or the person designated by the patient to the indexed patient identification data and the indexed diagnostic image.

15. A system according to claim 14, wherein the first database is located on a portable storage medium.

16. A system according to claim 15, wherein the portable storage medium includes a smart card.

17. A system according to claim 15, wherein the image derived key is stored on the portable storage medium together with the patient identification data.

18. A system according to claim 14, wherein the second database is accessible to the authorized user over a network.

19. A system according to claim 14, further including a scanning component for scanning a region in the diagnostic image from which the unique pixel sequence sample is derived.

20. A system according to claim 19, wherein the scanning component scans the region for a minimum level of physiological medical recording variation to ensure that the pixel sequence sample is unique to the diagnostic image.
