Abstract

Several defibrillators, defibrillator architectures, defibrillator components and methods of operating defibrillators are described. In one aspect, a defibrillator (as for example an automated external defibrillator) that can be powered by a mobile communication device such as a smart cellular phone or a tablet computer is described. Utilizing a phone (or other mobile communication device) as the power supply for an external defibrillator allows the external defibrillator to be smaller and, in some circumstance, removes the need for a battery that stores sufficient energy for shock delivery—which would need to be checked and/or replaced on a regular basis. Additionally, when desired, certain control functionality, computation, data processing, and user instructions can be handled/presented by the mobile communications device thereby further simplifying the defibrillator design and improving the user experience. This architecture takes advantage of the nearly ubiquitous availability of smart phones, tablet computers and other mobile communication devices.

Claims

1. A defibrillator unit comprising:

a connector suitable for facilitating connecting the defibrillator unit to a mobile communication device to facilitate receiving power from the mobile communication device;

electrocardiography circuitry for detecting electrical activity of a heart of a patient;

a capacitor unit capable of temporarily storing and discharging sufficient energy to deliver a defibrillation shock to a patient;

shock delivery circuitry for discharging the a capacitor unit to deliver the defibrillation shock;

a charging circuit that controls the transfer of energy from the mobile communication device to the capacitor unit to facilitate charging the capacitor unit to a level suitable to facilitate the delivery of the defibrillation shock to the patient, wherein the defibrillator unit is configured to automatically begin charging the capacitor unit when the defibrillator unit is initially connected to the mobile communication device; and

a defibrillator controller configured to determine whether a patient has a shockable heart rhythm based on the electrical activity of the heart of the patient detected by the electrocardiography circuitry, control the charging circuit to thereby control the charging of the capacitor unit, and control the shock delivery circuitry to thereby control the delivery of the defibrillation shock when it is determined that the patient has a shockable heart rhythm, wherein the determination of whether the patient has a shockable heart rhythm is independently made by the defibrillator controller without the receipt of any shock commands or analysis of the patient from the mobile communication device.

2. A defibrillator unit comprising:

a manually activatable power-on button configured to activate the defibrillator unit to facilitate use of the defibrillator unit,. wherein the defibrillator unit is initially activated when the power-on button is manually activated by a user to indicate that the user desires to utilize the defibrillator unit;

a connector suitable for facilitating connecting the defibrillator unit to a mobile communication device to thereby facilitate receiving power from the mobile communication device;

electrocardiography circuitry for detecting electrical activity of a heart of a patient;

a capacitor unit capable of temporarily storing and discharging sufficient energy to deliver a defibrillation shock to the patient;

shock delivery circuitry for discharging the capacitor unit to deliver the defibrillation shock; and

a charging circuit that controls the transfer of energy from a power supply to the capacitor unit to facilitate charging the capacitor unit to a level suitable to facilitate the delivery of the defibrillation shock to the patient, wherein the defibrillator unit is configured to automatically begin charging the capacitor unit upon the activation of the power-on button, such activation occurring before any patient sensing occurs in order to determine whether the patient has a shockable heart rhythm.

3. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the defibrillator unit is configured to be connected to the mobile communication device during use of the defibrillator unit to facilitate the receipt of energy from the mobile communication device.

4. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 3 wherein the mobile communication device is not a part of, integrated with, or coupled to the defibrillator unit in any way during normal use of the mobile communication device.

5. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the connector is a USB connector port.

6. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the connector is a connector selected from the group consisting of:

a micro USB connector;

a lightening connector;

a USB-C connector;

a USB 2.0 connector;

a USB 3.0 connector; and

a 30 pin dock connector.

7. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 further comprising a short range wireless communication module configured to communicate with the mobile communication device using a short range wireless communication protocol.

8. A defibrillator system comprising:

a defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2; and

a mobile communications device having a display, a battery, a processor, memory and a defibrillator control app, the defibrillator control app being stored in the memory and executable on the processor to at least partially control the defibrillator unit during use of the defibrillator system.

9. A defibrillator system as recited in claim 8 wherein the defibrillator system functions as an automated external defibrillator.

10. A defibrillator system as recited in claim 8 further comprising a defibrillator housing, wherein the housing holds the mobile communication device, the capacitor unit, the shock delivery circuitry and the charging circuit in an integrated package.

A defibrillator system as recited in claim 10, wherein the defibrillator housing contains a first chamber that holds the mobile communication device, a second chamber that holds the capacitor, the charging circuit and the shock delivery circuitry, and a third chamber that holds electrode pads suitable for attachment to a patient to deliver the defibrillation shock.

12. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 further comprising a bleed circuit that slowly drains the capacitor unit such that the capacitor unit will not retain a charge for a prolonged period of time.

13. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 12 wherein the bleed circuit is a voltage measuring circuit that is also capable of measuring a voltage of the capacitor unit.

14. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the defibrillator unit does not include an energy storage device separate from the capacitor unit containing sufficient energy to facilitate charging the capacitor unit sufficiently to deliver the defibrillation shock to a patient.

15. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the defibrillation unit does not include an internal power supply containing sufficient energy to charge the capacitor unit to a level suitable for delivering the defibrillation shock to the patient.

A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 wherein the charging circuit includes a flyback converter arranged to receive a power input having a voltage of no more than approximately five volts and to boost the power input voltage suitably to charge the capacitor unit to a voltage suitable for delivery of the defibrillation shock.

17. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 further comprising a defibrillator app configured to launch automatically when the defibrillator unit is initially connected to the mobile communication device.

18. A defibrillator unit as recited in claim 2 further comprising a defibrillator app configured to launch automatically when the mobile communication device detects the presence of the defibrillator unit.

19. A defibrillator unit comprising:

electrocardiography circuitry for detecting electrical activity of a heart of a patient;

a capacitor unit capable of temporarily storing and discharging sufficient energy to deliver a defibrillation shock to the patient;

shock delivery circuitry for discharging the a capacitor unit to deliver the defibrillation shock; and

a charging circuit that controls the transfer of energy from a power supply to the capacitor unit to facilitate charging the capacitor unit to a level suitable to facilitate the delivery of the defibrillation shock to the patient; and

a controller configured to (i) set a maximum draw current for the charging circuit, whereby different maximum draw currents drawn can be specified for charging the capacitor unit, and (ii) set the maximum input draw current based at least in part on a current delivery capability of the power supply.

20. A method of operating a defibrillator unit comprising:

detecting a connection of a defibrillator unit to a mobile communication device having a display, processor, memory and a defibrillator control app, the defibrillator control app being stored in the memory and executable by the processor;

automatically initiating charging of a shock delivery capacitor on the defibrillator unit in response to the detection of the connection of the defibrillator unit to the mobile communication device, the shock delivery capacitor being capable of temporarily storing and discharging sufficient energy to deliver a defibrillation shock to a patient; and

wherein the defibrillator unit is suitable for connection to multiple different types of mobile communications devices having different current delivery capabilities and different maximum draw currents can be specified for charging the capacitor unit using different mobile communication devices.

21. A method as recited in claim 20 further comprising automatically launching a pre-loaded defibrillator app on the mobile device in response to the detection of defibrillator unit to the mobile communication device.

A method as recited in claim 20 further comprising determining whether the connected mobile communication device has a pre-loaded defibrillator app stored thereon, and when it is determined that the connected mobile communication device does not have a pre-loaded defibrillator app stored thereon, automatically sending a defibrillator app to the connected mobile communication device.

23. A method as recited in claim 20 wherein the defibrillator unit further includes a charging circuit that charges the shock delivery capacitor, the method further comprising setting a maximum draw current for the charging circuit wherein the maximum draw current is set based at least in part on a current delivery capability of the connected mobile communication device.
