1. A low voltage battery for an electric vehicle, the battery comprising:
- a plurality of electrochemical cells;
a heat source configured to increase a temperature of at least one of the plurality of electrochemical cells when the heat source is activated, wherein the heat source receives power from one or more of the plurality of electrochemical cells;
a control circuit configured to control activation of the heat source; and
a battery housing configured to enclose the plurality of electrochemical cells, the heat source, and the control circuit, wherein the control circuit is configured to control activation of the heat source based on one or more conditions of the battery housing.

Disclosed herein are battery systems for electric vehicles. An electric vehicle may include a first battery. The first battery may be configured to power various low voltage systems. For example, the first battery may provide the power to start the vehicle. The vehicle may include a second battery. The second battery may be configured to power one or more electric motors for propelling the vehicle. The first battery may supply power necessary to engage and/or access the power stored in the second battery. The first battery may include a heater to ensure that the first battery can supply ample power to initiate a start sequence in low temperatures.

16. A method of starting an electric vehicle, the method comprising:

transmitting power from a first battery of an electric vehicle to a second battery of the electric vehicle; transmitting power from the second battery to a heat source disposed entirely within a housing of the first battery, wherein the housing also houses a plurality of electrochemical cells of the first battery, and wherein the housing comprises a lid and a plurality of terminal posts each extending through the lid and coupling to one or more of the plurality of electrochemical cells; and warming the first battery with the heat source. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20)
