Abstract

The present invention relates generally a system and method for providing rolling code remote device functions to provide keyless entry to multiple makes and models of cars. The present invention is adapted to produce the radio signal type and transmitted data of an original manufacturer'"'"'s keyless entry remote device system by implementing multiple modulation schema and data encoding techniques.

Claims

1. A method for selectively programming RF a radio frequency (“

RF”

) remote access device, the method comprising;

a. selecting by direct user manipulation of one or more user interface elements on the remote access device a device configuration profile from a plurality of device configuration profiles preloaded onto the RF remote access device, the device configuration profile comprising a plurality of vendor specific properties including two or more of;

transmit and/or receive frequencies, modulation schemes, binary encoding algorithms, data encoding techniques, packet payload templates, and algorithms configured to generate rolling codes to replicate the function of an original equipment manufacturer (“

OEM”

) keyless entry remote device;

b. storing in a memory of the remote access device the selected device configuration profile, the storing being based on user manipulation of the one or more user interface elements; and

c. automatically configuring the remote access device based on a processor of the remote access device accessing from the memory the stored selected device configuration profile, whereby the remote access device is configured to;

i. generate an RF signal based on the selected device configuration profile; and

ii. transmit the RF signal to an end device associated with the selected device configuration profile to cause the end device to perform a predefined operation.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of device configuration profiles comprises a set of original equipment manufacturer (“

OEM”

) configurations for specific vehicle makes and models.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the method comprises:

a. selecting the device configuration profile stored on the remote access device from a plurality of device configuration profiles stored on the remote access device by a configuration tool.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the storing the set of selected device configuration profiles comprises selecting the device configuration profile by communication means selected from:

a radio frequency communication, an inductive link communication, an infra-red communication, a visible light communication, an ultra-sonic communication, a USB communication, a serial peripheral data communication, an integrated circuit bus communication, and an iWire data communication.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the RF signal is generated based on the selected device configuration profile and an encryption code.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the encryption code is a rolling code.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the remote access device is configured to transmit by a means selected from the group consisting of:

a radio frequency transmission, a Bluetooth transmission, an infra-red transmission, a visible light transmission, and an 802.11 wireless transmission.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the method comprises:

a. storing a first device configuration profile and a second device configuration profile; and

b. selecting the first device configuration profile, whereby the remote access device is configured to;

i. generate an RF signal based on the selected first device configuration profile; and

ii. transmit the RF signal based on the selected first device configuration profile to an end device associated with the selected first device configuration profile to cause the end device to perform a predefined operation.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the method further comprises:

a. selecting the second device configuration profile, whereby the remote access device is configured to;

i. generate an RF signal based on the selected set of second device configuration profile; and

ii. transmit the RF signal based on the selected set of second device configuration profile to an end device associated with the selected second device configuration profile to cause the end device to perform a predefined operation.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the transmission power of the RF signal is automatically configured based on a detected battery condition.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of device configuration profiles comprise a plurality of encrypted device configuration profiles;

storing the plurality of encrypted device configuration profiles in the memory; and

decrypting a selected device configuration profile from the plurality of encrypted device configuration profiles stored in the memory.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the remote access device is further configured to automatically store location information when transmitting the RF signal.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the end device is an automobile and the RF signal causes the automobile to perform one or more of a locking/unlocking function, an engine ignition enable function, a trunk opening function, a remote device recognition, and an alarm function.

The method of claim 13 wherein the device configuration profile includes a first configuration profile associated with a first automobile and a second configuration profile associated with a second automobile, the remote access device adapted to be configured to generate and transmit a first RF signal to cause the first automobile to perform a predefined operation and to generate and transmit a second RF signal to cause the second automobile to perform a predefined operation, the first RF signal being different that the second RF signal.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the device configuration profile includes information derived from one or more of the following vendor-specific properties:

transmit and/or receive frequencies, modulation schemes, binary encoding algorithms, data encoding techniques, packet payload templates, and algorithms configured to generate rolling codes to replicate the function of an OEM keyless entry remote device.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the automatically configuring further comprises dynamically shaping an antenna using a matching network to change the transmission frequency of the RF signal.

17. A system for selectively programming a radio frequency (“

RF”

) remote access device, the remote access device comprising;

a processor;

a set of user interface elements adapted for user manipulation for selecting a device configuration profile;

a transmitter; and

a memory comprising a program memory and a set of vendor partitions, the set of vendor partitions having stored therein a plurality of device configuration profiles preloaded onto the RF remote access device, and the program memory adapted to store a user selected device configuration profile selected based on user manipulation of the set of user interface elements;

wherein the device configuration profile comprises a plurality of vendor specific properties including two or more of;

transmit and/or receive frequencies, modulation schemes, binary encoding algorithms, data encoding techniques, packet payload templates, and algorithms configured to generate rolling codes to replicate the function of

whereby;

i. the processor is adapted to receive an input of a vendor code from the set of user interface elements, the input representing a selected device configuration profile from the plurality of device configuration profiles;

ii. the processor is adapted to load the selected device configuration profile from the vendor partition into the program memory;

iii. the processor is adapted to automatically configure the RF remote access device by accessing the selected device configuration profile loaded into the program memory;

iv. the processor further adapted to generate a payload comprising a generated key sequence based on applying an algorithm to the plurality of vendor specific properties from the selected device configuration profile; and

v. the transmitter is adapted to transmit an RF signal comprising the payload to an end device associated with the selected device configuration profile to cause the end device to perform a predefined operation.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the plurality of device configuration profiles comprises a set of original equipment manufacturer (“

OEM”

) configurations for specific vehicle makes and models.

19. The system of claim 17 wherein the RF remote access device further comprises an active learning configuration module.

20. The system of claim 17 wherein the RF remote access device comprises a manual input adapted to be configured in part based on a desired object to be controlled by the remote access device.

21. The system of claim 17 further comprising an external device as a configuration tool.

22. The system of claim 17 wherein the RF remote access device is adapted to receive the selection of a device configuration profile by communication means selected from:

a radio frequency communication, an inductive link communication, an infra-red communication, a visible light communication, an ultra-sonic communication, a USB communication, a serial peripheral data communication, an integrated circuit bus communication, and an iWire data communication.

23. The system of claim 17 wherein the RF remote access device further comprises an encryption module.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the processor is further adapted to:

a. retrieve an encryption code from the encryption module, the encryption code associated with the selected device configuration profile; and

b. generate the RF signal based on the device configuration profiles and the encryption code.

25. The system of claim 24 wherein the encryption code is a rolling code.

26. The system of claim 17 wherein the transmitter is adapted to transmit the RF signal by a means selected from the group consisting of:

a radio frequency transmission, a Bluetooth transmission, an infra-red transmission, a visible light transmission, and an 802.11 wireless transmission.

27. The system of claim 17 wherein the program memory is adapted to store a first device configuration profile and a second device configuration profile.

28. The system of claim 17 wherein the RF remote access device is further adapted to:

a. receive from the set of user interface elements an input representing the selection of an active device configuration profile selected from the first device configuration profile and the second device configuration profile;

b. generate by the processor a RF signal based on the active device configuration profile; and

c. transmit by the transmitter the RF signal based on the active device configuration profile to a device associated with the active device configuration profile to cause the end device to perform a predefined operation.

29. The system of claim 17 wherein the output power of the transmitter is adjusted automatically based on a detected battery condition to adjust the power of the RF signal.

30. The system of claim 17 wherein the plurality of device configuration profiles stored in the vendor partitions of the memory are encrypted.

31. The system of claim 17 wherein the RF remote access device further comprises an encryption module for encrypting/decrypting the selected device configuration profile stored in the set of vendor partitions of the memory.

32. The system of claim 17 wherein the RF remote access device comprises a location determination means.

33. The system of claim 17 wherein the end device is an automobile and the RF signal causes the automobile to perform one or more of a locking/unlocking function, an engine ignition enable function, a trunk opening function, a remote device recognition, and an alarm function.

The system of claim 33 wherein the device configuration profile includes a first configuration profile associated with a first automobile and a second configuration profile associated with a second automobile, the remote access device adapted to be configured to generate and transmit a first RF signal to cause the first automobile to perform a predefined operation and to generate and transmit a second RF signal to cause the second automobile to perform a predefined operation, the first RF signal being different that the second RF signal.

35. The system of claim 17 wherein the device configuration profile includes information derived from the following vendor-specific properties:

transmit and/or receive frequencies, modulation schemes, binary encoding algorithms, data encoding techniques, packet payload templates, and algorithms configured to generate rolling codes to replicate the function of an OEM keyless entry remote device.

36. The system of claim 17 wherein the shape of the transmitter is dynamically adjusted using a matching network to adjust the transmission frequency of the RF signal.

37. A selectively programmable RF remote access device comprising:

a. a memory adapted to store a plurality of device configuration profiles preloaded onto the RF remote access device;

b. a set of user interface elements adapted to enable a user to select, by direct user manipulation of one or more of the set of user interface elements on the remote access device, a device configuration profile from the plurality of device configuration profiles, the selected device configuration profile comprising a plurality of vendor specific properties including two or more of;

transmit and/or receive frequencies, modulation schemes, binary encoding algorithms, data encoding techniques, packet payload templates, and algorithms configured to generate rolling codes to replicate the function of an original equipment manufacturer (“

OEM”

) keyless entry remote device;

c. a processor adapted to access the selected device configuration profile stored in the memory, configure the RF remote access device based on the accessed selected device configuration profile, and generate an RF signal based on the selected device configuration profile; and

d. a transmitter adapted to transmit the RF signal to an end device associated with the device configuration profile to cause the end device to perform a predefined operation.

38. The device of claim 37 wherein the plurality of device configuration profiles comprises a set of original equipment manufacturer (“

OEM”

) configurations for specific vehicle makes and models.

39. The device of claim 37 wherein the end device is an automobile and the RF signal causes the automobile to perform one or more of a locking/unlocking function, an engine ignition enable function, a trunk opening function, a remote device recognition, and an alarm function.

40. The device of claim 39 wherein the plurality of device configuration profiles includes a first configuration profile associated with a first automobile and a second configuration profile associated with a second automobile, the remote access device adapted to be configured to generate and transmit a first RF signal to cause the first automobile to perform a predefined operation and to generate and transmit a second RF signal to cause the second automobile to perform a predefined operation, the first RF signal being different that the second RF signal.

41. The device of claim 37 wherein the memory is adapted to store a first device configuration profile and a second device configuration profile.

42. The device of claim 41 wherein the RF remote access device is further adapted to:

a. receive from the set of user interface elements an input representing the selection of an active device configuration profile selected from the first device configuration profile and the second device configuration profile;

b. generate by the processor a RF signal based on the active device configuration profile; and

c. transmit by the transmitter the RF signal based on the active device configuration profile to a device associated with the active device configuration profile to cause the end device to perform a predefined operation.

43. The device of claim 37 wherein interchangeable parts allow the user to reconfigure the external appearance of the RF remote access device.

44. The device of claim 37 wherein the RF remote access device further comprises an encryption module adapted to perform an encryption/decryption of the selected device configuration profile stored in the memory.

45. The system of claim 37 wherein the shape of the transmitter is dynamically adjusted using a matching network to adjust the transmission frequency of the RF signal.
