Abstract

A method for outputting a combined power source alarm for an implantable blood pump includes determining a status for each of first and second power sources of the blood pump. A combined power source alarm based on the statuses of the first and second power sources is outputted. A method for generating an alarm based on fault detections in a mechanically assisted circulation system includes processing a series of fault detection indications to classify a fault as active or inactive. An alarm is generated if the fault is active for more than a predetermined amount of time.

Claims

1. A mechanically assisted circulation (MAC) system, comprising:

a blood pump assembly;

a control unit configured to control operation of the blood pump assembly;

a blood pump assembly monitor module configured to detect each of a plurality of different fault conditions of the blood pump assembly and generate a respective series of indications for each of the different fault conditions, each of the respective series of indications being indicative of whether the respective fault condition of the blood pump assembly is detected during a respective time period of the indication;

a fault handler module configured to, for each of the different fault conditions, reclassify the fault condition from being inactive to being active in response to each of a first subseries of the respective series of indications being indicative of detection of the respective fault condition during the respective time period of the indication, the first subseries having a predetermined set soaking number, for the respective fault condition, of the series of indications; and

an alarm handler module configured to generate, for each of the different fault conditions, an alarm for the fault condition in response to the fault condition being reclassified as active.

2. The MAC system of claim 1, wherein the blood pump assembly comprises the blood pump assembly monitor module.

3. The MAC system of claim 1, wherein the control unit comprises the fault handler module and the alarm handler module.

4. The MAC system of claim 1, wherein the set soaking number is greater than one.

5. The MAC system of claim 1, wherein:

the fault handler module is configured to reclassify the fault condition from being active to being inactive in response to each of a second subseries of the series of indications being indicative of non-detection of the fault condition during the respective time period, the second subseries having a predetermined clear soaking number of the series of indications; and

the alarm handler module is configured to clear the alarm for the fault condition in response to the fault condition being reclassified from being active to being inactive.

6. The MAC system of claim 5, wherein the clear soaking number is from one to three.

7. The MAC system of claim 5, wherein the clear soaking number is greater than the set soaking number.

8. The MAC system of claim 5, wherein the clear soaking number is equal to the set soaking number.

9. The MAC system of claim 5, wherein the clear soaking number is less than the set soaking number.

10. The MAC system of claim 1, wherein the alarm handler module is configured to generate the alarm for the fault condition in response to the fault condition being active for a persistence time less than or equal to fifteen seconds.

11. The MAC system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of different fault conditions of the blood pump assembly include at least four of:

(a) a low flow fault condition, (b) a pump stopped fault condition, (c) a low speed hazard fault condition, (d) a low speed advisory fault condition, (e) a suction event fault condition, (f) an excessive rotor displacement and/or noise fault condition, (g) a circuit over temperature fault condition, (h) a reference voltage fault condition, (i) a bearing over current fault condition, (j) a drive over current fault condition, (k) a EEPROM communication error fault condition, (l) an operating data corruption fault condition, (m) a magnetic centering fault condition, (n) a harmonic compensation fault condition, and (o) a displacement fault condition.

The MAC system of claim 1, wherein the fault handler module is configured to, for each of the different fault conditions, reclassify the fault condition from being active to being inactive in response to each of a second subseries of the respective series of indications being indicative of non-detection of the fault condition during the respective time period, the second subseries having a predetermined clear soaking number of the series of indications.

13. The MAC system of claim 12, wherein the alarm handler module is configured to, for each of the different fault conditions, clear the respective alarm for the fault condition in response to the fault condition being reclassified from being active to being inactive.

14. The MAC system of claim 1, further comprising:

a power supply system; and

a power supply system monitor module configured to detect each of a plurality of different fault conditions of the power supply system and generate a respective series of indications for each of the different fault conditions;

and wherein;

the fault handler module is configured to, for each of the different fault conditions of the power supply system, reclassify the fault condition from being inactive to being active in response to each of a first subseries of the respective series of indications being indicative of detection of the fault condition during a respective time period, the first subseries having a predetermined set soaking number, for the fault condition, of the series of indications; and

the alarm handler module is configured to generate, for each of the different fault conditions of the power supply system, an alarm for the fault condition in response to the fault condition being reclassified as active.

15. The MAC system of claim 1, wherein:

the control unit includes an emergency backup battery and an emergency backup battery monitor module configured to detect each of a plurality of different fault conditions of the emergency backup battery and generate a respective series of indications for each of the different fault conditions;

the fault handler module is configured to, for each of the different fault conditions of the emergency backup battery, reclassify the fault condition from being inactive to being active in response to each of a first subseries of the respective series of indications being indicative of detection of the fault condition during a respective time period, the first subseries having a predetermined set soaking number, for the fault condition, of the series of indications; and

the alarm handler module is configured to generate, for each of the different fault conditions of the emergency backup battery, an alarm for the fault condition in response to the fault condition being reclassified as active.

16. A mechanically assisted circulation (MAC) system, comprising:

a blood pump assembly;

a control unit that controls operation of the blood pump assembly;

a blood pump assembly monitor module configured to detect a fault condition of the blood pump and generate a series of indications, each of the series of indications being indicative of whether the fault condition of the blood pump assembly is detected during a respective time period;

a fault handler module that reclassifies the fault condition from being inactive to being active in response to each of a first subseries of the series of indications being indicative of detection of the fault condition during the respective time period, the first subseries having a predetermined set soaking number of the series of indications, the set soaking number being greater than one; and

an alarm handler module that generates an alarm for the fault condition in response to receiving an indication from the fault handler module that the fault condition is active.

17. The MAC system of claim 16, wherein the blood pump assembly comprises the blood pump assembly monitor module.

18. The MAC system of claim 16, wherein the control unit comprises the fault handler module and the alarm handler module.

19. The MAC system of claim 16, wherein:

the fault handler module reclassifies the fault condition from being active to being inactive in response to each of a second subseries of the series of indications being indicative of non-detection of the fault condition during the respective time period, the second subseries having a predetermined clear soaking number of the series of indications; and

the alarm handler module clears the alarm for the fault condition in response to the fault condition being reclassified from being active to being inactive.

20. The MAC system of claim 16, wherein the alarm handler module generates an alarm for the fault condition in response to receiving, for a persistence time between one and fifteen seconds, an indication from the fault handler module that the fault condition is active.

21. A mechanically assisted circulation (MAC) system, comprising:

a blood pump assembly;

a control unit that controls operation of the blood pump assembly;

a blood pump assembly monitor module configured to detect a fault condition of the blood pump and generate a series of indications, each of the series of indications being indicative of whether the fault condition of the blood pump assembly is detected during a respective time period;

a fault handler module that reclassifies the fault condition from being inactive to being active in response to each of a first subseries of the series of indications being indicative of detection of the fault condition during the respective time period, the first subseries having a predetermined set soaking number of the series of indications; and

an alarm handler module that generates an alarm for the fault condition in response to receiving, for a persistence time between one and fifteen seconds, an indication from the fault handler module that the fault condition is active.

22. The MAC system of claim 21, wherein the blood pump assembly comprises the blood pump assembly monitor module.

23. The MAC system of claim 21, wherein the control unit comprises the fault handler module and the alarm handler module.

24. The MAC system of claim 21, wherein:

the fault handler module reclassifies the fault condition from being active to being inactive in response to each of a second subseries of the series of indications being indicative of non-detection of the fault condition during the respective time period, the second subseries having a predetermined clear soaking number of the series of indications; and

the alarm handler module clears the alarm for the fault condition in response to the fault condition being reclassified from being active to being inactive.
