Abstract

A system and method for mapping a combined frequency division duplexing (FDD) Time Division Multiplexing (TDM)/Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) downlink subframe for use with half-duplex and full-duplex terminals in a communication system. Embodiments of the downlink subframe vary Forward Error Correction (FEC) types for a given modulation scheme as well as support the implementation of a smart antenna at a base station in the communication system. Embodiments of the system are also used in a TDD communication system to support the implementation of smart antennae. A scheduling algorithm allows TDM and TDMA portions of a downlink to efficiently co-exist in the same downlink subframe and simultaneously support full and half-duplex terminals.

Claims

1. A method of enabling communication between a base station and a plurality of cellular telephones, comprising:

enabling the base station to,

encode control information for the cellular telephones scheduled to receive downlink (DL) data in a DL frame and cellular telephones scheduled to transmit data in an uplink (UL) frame, the control information including,

a preamble for synchronization of the cellular telephones to the base station;

information about DL transmission resources allocated to cellular telephones scheduled to receive DL data in the DL frame, a DL transmission resource being associated with a DL physical (PHY) mode,

information about UL transmission resources allocated to cellular telephones scheduled to transmit data in the UL frame, an UL transmission resource being associated with an UL PHY mode,

encode the DL data using the associated DL PHY mode, in the DL frame, and

transmit the DL frame and the control information to the plurality of cellular telephones;

enabling at a first cellular telephone to,

achieve downlink synchronization with the base station and establish a downlink from the base station over one or more DL orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subchannels,

receive from the base station the DL data and decode the DL data using the information about the DL transmission resource and the associated DL physical (PHY) mode; and

enabling a second cellular telephone to,

achieve uplink synchronization with the base station and establish an uplink to the base station over one or more UL OFDM subchannels,

encode the UL data using the information about the UL transmission resource and the associated UL PHY mode, and

transmit the UL data to the base station in the UL frame.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second cellular telephone is operable to update the UL PHY mode based on an indication from the first cellular telephone to the base station of a preferred UL PHY mode.

3. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base station is operable to update the UL PHY mode and the DL PHY mode based on data traffic requirements and physical layer requirements of the wireless communication system.

4. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the physical layer requirements include one or more of interference minimization, propagation delays and round trip delays.

5. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first cellular telephone is operable to map OFDM symbols to the DL OFDM subchannels.

6. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second cellular telephone is operable to map OFDM symbols to the UL OFDM subchannels.

7. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base station is further operable to determine the UL transmission resource information for the second cellular telephone based on a request message transmitted by the second cellular telephone to the base station.

8. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base station is operable to encode the control information using a most robust PHY mode compatible with the plurality of cellular telephones.

9. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the DL PHY mode provides information about a DL modulation scheme and a DL coding scheme to be used by the first cellular telephone for encoding the DL data.

10. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the UL PHY mode provides information about an UL modulation scheme and an UL coding scheme to be used by the second cellular telephone for encoding the UL data.

11. A wireless system comprising:

a base station enabled to,

encode control information for the cellular telephones scheduled to receive downlink (DL) data in a DL frame and cellular telephones scheduled to transmit data in an uplink (UL) frame, the control information including,

a preamble for synchronizing the cellular telephones to the base station;

information about DL transmission resources allocated to cellular telephones scheduled to receive DL data in the DL frame, the information about a DL transmission resource for each cellular telephone scheduled to receive data in the DL frame being associated with a DL physical (PHY) mode,

information about UL transmission resources allocated to cellular telephones scheduled to transmit data in the UL frame, the information about a UL transmission resource for each cellular telephone scheduled to transmit data in the UL frame being associated with a UL PHY mode,

encode the DL data using the information about DL transmission resource allocated to cellular telephones scheduled to transmit DL data in the DL frame; and

transmit the DL frame with the control information to the cellular telephones; and

a cellular telephone enabled to,

achieve downlink synchronization with the base station and establish a downlink from the base station over one or more DL orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) sub channels,

receive from the base station the information about the DL transmission resource allocated to the cellular telephone in the DL frame, and

decode the DL data from the DL frame using the information about the DL transmission resource allocated to the cellular telephone in the DL frame.

12. A system as claimed in claim 11, wherein the base station is enabled to encode the DL data by:

packing and fragmenting variable length MAC messages based on the information about the DL transmission resource allocated to the cellular telephone in the DL frame; and

error encoding and modulating the MAC messages based on the DL PHY mode provided by the information about the DL transmission resource allocated to the cellular telephone in the DL frame.

13. A system as in claim 11, wherein the DL PHY mode is updated based on the quality of the downlink.

14. A system as claimed in claim 11, wherein the cellular telephone is further enabled to

achieve uplink synchronization with the base station and establish an uplink to the base station over a number of UL OFDM subchannels,

encode the UL data using the information about the UL transmission resource allocated to the cellular telephone in the UL frame, and

transmit the UL data to the base station in the UL frame.

15. A system as claimed in claim 14, wherein the cellular telephone is enabled to encode the UL data by:

packing and fragmenting variable length MAC messages based on the information about the UL transmission resource allocated to the cellular telephone in the UL frame; and

error encoding and modulating the MAC messages based on the UL PHY mode provided by the information about the UL transmission resource allocated to the cellular telephone in the UL frame.

16. A system as in claim 11, wherein the UL PHY mode is updated based on the quality of the uplink.

17. A system as claimed in claim 11, wherein the information about the DL transmission resource allocated to the cellular telephone includes at least one of:

a list of indicators pointing out a start and an end of each DL transmission resource, and

a list of indicators pointing out a start and a length of each DL transmission resource.

18. A system as claimed in claim 17, wherein the start and the length of each DL transmission resource is stated using one of:

a number of symbols referenced to the start of the DL frame; and

predefined units of time.

19. A system as claimed in claim 11, wherein the information about UL transmission resources allocated to the cellular telephone includes at least one of:

a list of indicators pointing out a start and an end of each UL transmission resource, and

a list of indicators pointing out a start and a length of each UL transmission resource.

20. A system as claimed in claim 19, wherein the start and the length of each UL transmission resource is stated using one of:

a number of symbols referenced to the start of the UL frame; and

predefined units of time.

21. A system as claimed in claim 11, wherein the DL PHY mode provides information about a DL modulation scheme and a DL coding scheme to be used by the cellular telephone for encoding the DL data.

22. A system as claimed in claim 11, wherein the UL PHY mode provides information about an UL modulation scheme and an UL coding scheme to be used by the cellular telephone for encoding the UL data.
