Abstract

Some embodiments of a wearable infusion pump system can include a pump device having a drive system to dispense a medicine to a user, an activity sensor that detects a possible change in an activity level of the user, and a controller to activate the drive system to dispense the medicine to the user. The controller device can query the user to indicate whether a detected activity level of the user represents an actual change in the activity level of the user. The controller device can alter the medicine dispensing schedule based on the user indicated changes in activity level.

Claims

1. A wearable infusion pump system, comprising:

a pump device including a drive system to dispense a medicine to a user;

a body-worn glucose sensor device being physically separated from the pump device;

an activity sensor to detect signals indicative of an activity level of the user, the activity sensor being part of the body-worn glucose sensor device; and

a controller to activate the drive system to dispense the medicine to the user based on a medicine dispensing schedule, the controller to query the user to indicate whether a detected activity level of the user represents an actual activity level of the user and to alter the medicine dispensing schedule based on the user-indicated activity level,

wherein the body-worn glucose sensor device is configured to wirelessly communicate with at least one of the controller and the pump device.

The wearable infusion pump system of claim 1, wherein the body-worn glucose sensor device comprises a sensor housing, a sensor shaft, a glucose sensor, the activity sensor, a power source, and a communication circuit, the sensor housing being adapted to be adhered to a user'"'"'s skin, the sensor shaft being adapted to penetrate under the user'"'"'s skin when the housing is adhered to the user'"'"'s skin, the communication circuit being adapted to wirelessly transmit glucose data and activity data from the activity sensor to at least one of the controller and the pump device.

3. The wearable infusion pump system of claim 1, wherein the system is adapted to alert the user to cease the physical activity if glucose levels are outside of a safe range.

4. The wearable infusion pump system of claim 1, wherein the pump device is an insulin pump device and the system is adapted to prompt the user to manually adjust an insulin dosage.

5. The wearable infusion pump system of claim 1, wherein the controller device is adapted to automatically decrease insulin delivery from the insulin pump device in response to a detected increased activity level.

6. The wearable infusion pump system of claim 5, wherein the controller device is adapted to alert the user to the automatic adjustment.

The wearable infusion pump system of claim 1, wherein the activity sensor comprises a blood oxygen sensor adapted to detect decreased blood oxygen levels, a blood pressure sensor adapted to detect increased blood pressure, a heart rate sensor adapted to detect increased heart rate, a body temperature sensor adapted to detect increased core temperature, a physiological sensor adapted to detect increased respiration rate, a physiological sensor adapted to detect increased perspiration, a physiological sensor adapted to detect increased muscle activity, or an accelerometer.

8. A glucose and activity sensing system comprising:

a controller device; and

a body-worn glucose sensor device comprising a sensor housing, a sensor shaft, a glucose sensor, one or more physiological sensors, a power source, and a communication circuit, the sensor housing being adapted to be adhered to a user'"'"'s skin, the sensor shaft being adapted to penetrate under the user'"'"'s skin when the housing is adhered to the user'"'"'s skin, the one or more physiological sensors being adapted to detect a user'"'"'s activity characteristics, the communication circuit of the body-worn glucose sensor device being adapted to wirelessly transmit glucose data and data from the one or more physiological sensors to the controller that is physically separated from the body-worn glucose sensor device.

9. The glucose and activity sensing system of claim 8, wherein the system is adapted to alert the user to cease the physical activity if glucose levels are outside of a safe range.

10. The glucose and activity sensing system of claim 8, wherein the system is adapted to prompt the user the manually adjust the user'"'"'s insulin dosage.

11. The glucose and activity sensing system of claim 8, wherein the controller device is adapted to alert the user to a detected physical activity.

12. The glucose and activity sensing system of claim 11, wherein the controller device is adapted to query the user to confirm that the detected physical activity has occurred.

13. The glucose and activity sensing system of claim 8, further comprising an insulin pump device.

14. The glucose and activity sensing system of claim 13, wherein the controller device is adapted to automatically decrease insulin delivery from the insulin pump device in response to a detected increase in physical activity.

15. The glucose and activity sensing system of claim 14, wherein the controller device is adapted alert the user to the automatic adjustment.

16. The glucose and activity sensing system of claim 8, wherein the one or more physiological sensors comprises a blood oxygen sensor adapted to detect decreased blood oxygen levels, a blood pressure sensor adapted to detect increased blood pressure, a heart rate sensor adapted to detect increased heart rate, a body temperature sensor adapted to detect increased core temperature, a physiological sensor adapted to detect increased respiration rate, a physiological sensor adapted to detect increased perspiration, or a physiological sensor adapted to detect increased muscle activity.

17. A body-worn glucose sensor device comprising

a sensor housing adapted to be adhered to a user'"'"'s skin;

a sensor shaft adapted to penetrate under the user'"'"'s skin when the housing is adhered to the user'"'"'s skin;

one or more physiological sensors adapted to detect a user'"'"'s activity characteristics;

a power source; and

a communication circuit that permits glucose data and data from the one or more physiological sensors indicative of a user'"'"'s activity characteristics to be wirelessly transmitted to a controller device that is physically separated from the body-worn glucose sensor device.

The body-worn glucose sensor device of claim 17, wherein the one or more physiological sensors comprises a blood oxygen sensor adapted to detect decreased blood oxygen levels, a blood pressure sensor adapted to detect increased blood pressure, a heart rate sensor adapted to detect increased heart rate, a body temperature sensor adapted to detect increased core temperature, a physiological sensor adapted to detect increased respiration rate, a physiological sensor adapted to detect increased perspiration, a physiological sensor adapted to detect increased muscle activity, or an accelerometer.

19. The body-worn glucose sensor device of claim 17, wherein the one or more physiological sensors are arranged along the sensor shaft so as to penetrate into the user'"'"'s body when the glucose sensor device is in operation.
