Abstract

In a syringe type pump with a barrel (2) and a piston (4) movable in the interior of the barrel the barrel has the shape of a segment of a toroidal tube (2) and the piston is moved by means of a driving rod (6) which is guided and supported by the inner surface of the barrel wall. By the toroidal shape the overall size of the pump is significantly reduced and by guiding and supporting the driving rod of the piston by the inner surface of the barrel wall intrinsic problems of tightness, stick-slip phenomena and blockage are solved. A device for injecting fluid into a patient'"'"'s body or removing body fluid therefrom is using a syringe type pump with a toroidal barrel and a driving rod of the piston guided and supported by the inner surface of the barrel wall.

Claims

1. A syringe type pump comprising:

a barrel curved in a shape of a segment of a toroidal tube,

a connecting opening for the passage of fluid, the connecting opening located adjacent one end of the barrel,

a drive gear,

a piston movable in the barrel; and

a curved continuous and uninterrupted driving rod, the driving rod to move the piston, the driving rod including a continuous and integral brace extending continuously and uninterrupted along a majority of a length of the driving rod and making contact with the barrel curved in the shape of the segment of the toroidal tube, the brace being slidably supported in the barrel, the rod including a gear rim,

wherein wherever the drive gear engages with the gear rim of the driving rod to move the rod and the piston, the drive gear engages with the gear rim where the continuous and integral brace is directly behind and contacting the continuous and uninterrupted driving rod.

2. The pump according to claim 1 wherein the barrel has a circular, elliptical, oval or angular cross-section.

3. The pump according to claim 1 wherein the driving rod is guided and supported by the barrel by a low-friction sliding surface.

4. The pump according to claim 1 wherein the driving rod is guided and supported by the barrel by balls rolling at an interface between the barrel and the driving rod.

5. The pump according to claim 1 wherein control elements for the movement of the piston are integrated or remote control signals.

18. The pump according to claim 1, wherein:

the driving rod is flexible.

6. A device for injecting a fluid into a patient'"'"'s body or retrieving body fluid therefrom, comprising:

a barrel curved in a shape of a segment of a toroidal tube with a lengthwise extending axis;

a connecting passage at an end of the barrel;

a drive gear;

a piston movable along the axis and disposed in an interior of the barrel; and

a curved continuous and uninterrupted driving rod for reciprocally moving the piston, the driving rod including a brace extending continuously and uninterrupted along a majority of a length of the driving rod and making contact with the barrel curved in a shape of the segment of the toroidal tube, the rod including a gear rim,

wherein wherever the drive gear engages with the gear rim of the driving rod to move the rod and the piston, the drive gear engages with the gear rim where the continuous and integral brace is directly behind and contacting the continuous and uninterrupted driving rod.

7. The device according to claim 6 wherein the device includes a reusable part comprising a driver and control elements, and a disposable part.

8. The device according to claim 6 further comprising a cannula connected to the barrel, the barrel for delivery of injection fluid.

9. The device according to one of claim 6 further comprising a cannula or a diagnostic probe connected to the barrel for removal of analysis fluid.

10. The device according to claim 6 further comprising more than one circular syringe pump for delivery of injection fluid, for removal of analysis fluid, or for introduction of segments of air or of a non-miscible fluid.

11. The device according to claim 6 further comprising an adhesive contact surface for contacting die patient'"'"'s skin and adhering the device to the patient'"'"'s skin.

12. The device according to claim 9 further comprising an inserting mechanism for the insertion of the cannula or the diagnostic probe into skin of the patient.

13. The device according to claim 12 wherein the cannula or diagnostic probe is fixedly positioned relative to the barrel and the inserting mechanism is a component with a flexible surface with an adhesive layer securing adherence of that surface to the skin, the flexible surface having two positions wherein in a first position said cannula or diagnostic probe is concealed by the surface and in a second position implantable parts of said cannula or diagnostic probe is exposed beyond the surface with a mechanism to bring the surface from the first to the second position.

14. The device according to claim 12 wherein the inserting mechanism for inserting the cannula or diagnostic probes into the skin actuates the piercing of protecting septums of said cannula or diagnostic probe before insertion into the skin.

The device according to claim 14 wherein the device contains at least two circular syringe pumps, one for delivery of injection fluid into a patient and one for removal of analysis fluid, and both are connected in parallel to an intravenous port of a dual-lumen intravenous catheter, sharing a same connection.

16. The device according to claim 13 wherein the adhesive layer is for temporary wearing on the body, and the adhesive layer is fixed on the flexible surface of the device by a reduced surface in comparison to the adhesive surface to the skin.

17. The device according to claim 13 wherein the device is applied to the skin using a functional package with a rim pressing the adhesive layer towards the skin and protecting the release and actuation elements of the device against unintended activation.

19. The device according to claim 6, wherein:

the driving rod is flexible.
