Abstract

Devices that sense sweat and are capable of providing chronological assurance are described. The device uses at least one sensor to measure sweat or its components and to determine a sweat sampling rate. The chronological assurance is determined, at least in part, using the sweat sampling rate. The sweat sampling rate may be determined, at least in part, using a sweat volume and/or a sweat generation rate, both of which may be measured or predetermined.

Claims

1. A sweat sensor device capable of continuous monitoring and chronological assurance comprising:

one or more sweat sensors adapted to detect a specific solute in sweat and to obtain measurements of said solute in sweat over at least a first time period and a second time period;

a sweat sampling volume between a sampling site on skin and said one or more sweat sensors, said sweat sampling volume at least in part determining a sweat sampling rate; and

electronics adapted to correlate said sweat sampling rate with said measurements from said one or more sensors to provide a chronological assurance of the effective rate at which newly originated sweat reaches said one or more sweat sensors during the first and second time periods.

2. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

an indicator that reports the chronological assurance.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein there are no intervening layers between the one or more sweat sensors and the sampling site and the sweat volume between the one or more sweat sensors and the sampling site is predetermined.

4. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

at least one microfluidic component between the one or more sweat sensors and the sampling site;

wherein the sweat volume is a predetermined volume and is a combined volume of the volume of the at least one microfluidic component and the volume between the at least one microfluidic component and the sampling site.

5. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

at least one microfluidic component between the one or more sweat sensors and the sampling site;

wherein the sweat volume is predetermined and is a combined volume of the volume of the at least one microfluidic component between the one or more sweat sensors and the sampling site and the volume between the device and the skin.

6. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

a sweat volume sensor that determines the sweat volume.

7. The device of claim 6, further comprising:

at least one impedance sensor capable of measuring electrical impedance;

wherein the sweat volume is determined by measuring the electrical impedance between the at least one impedance sensor and the skin.

8. The device of claim 6, further comprising:

at least two impedance sensors capable of measuring electrical impedance;

wherein the sweat volume is determined by measuring the electrical impedance between the at least two impedance sensors.

9. The device of claim 6, further comprising:

at least two impedance sensors capable of measuring electrical impedance;

wherein the sweat volume is determined by measuring the electrical impedance between the at least two impedance sensors and by at least one measurement of a concentration of ions in the sweat.

10. The device of claim 6, further comprising:

at least one impedance sensor capable of measuring electrical impedance;

wherein the sweat volume is determined by measuring the electrical impedance at least in part when the sweat volume is in a state void of sweat.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the sweat sampling rate is at least in part determined by a sweat generation rate.

12. The device of claim 11, further comprising:

a sweat generation rate sensor that determines the sweat generation rate.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein the sweat generation rate sensor measures at least one component of the sweat.

14. The device of claim 12, wherein the sweat generation rate sensor is capable of measuring electrical impedance and the sweat generation rate is determined by measuring the electrical impedance of the skin.

15. The device of claim 11, further comprising:

a sweat gland sensor that measures the number of sweat glands from which sweat is being sampled;

wherein the sweat sampling rate is at least in part determined by the number of sweat glands from which sweat is being sampled.

16. The device of claim 11, further comprising:

at least two sweat generation rate sensors that determine the sweat generation rate.

17. The device of claim 1, wherein the sweat sampling rate is at least in part determined by a solute generation rate.

18. The device of claim 17, further comprising:

a solute generation rate sensor that determines the solute generation rate.

19. The device of claim 17, further comprising:

at least one electrode effective to mediate the solute generation rate by electric field.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the sweat sampling rate is at least in part actively controlled by the mediated solute generation rate.

21. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

an additional sensor that measures non-advective transport of the solutes in the sweat;

wherein the sweat sampling rate is at least in part determined by the non-advective transport of the solutes in the sweat.

22. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

at least one sweat volume sensor that determines a sweat volume;

at least one sweat generation rate sensor that determines a sweat generation rate;

wherein the sweat sampling rate is determined by at least a combination of the sweat volume and the sweat generation rate.

23. The device of claim 1, wherein one or more sweat sensors measure a first component and a second component of sweat, wherein the sweat sampling rate is determined at least in part by the second component of sweat.

24. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

a wicking pump; and

a wicking sensor capable of measuring the ability of the wicking pump to wick the sweat from the skin;

wherein the sweat sampling rate is at least in part determined by the ability of the wicking pump to wick the sweat from the skin.

25. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

an evaporative pump; and

a wicking sensor capable of measuring the ability of the evaporative pump to wick the sweat from the skin;

wherein the sweat sampling rate is at least in part determined by the ability of the evaporative pump to wick the sweat from the skin.

26. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

a first sweat sensor measuring a solute in sweat; and

a second sweat sensor measuring the solute;

wherein both the first and second sweat sensors determine at least in part the chronological assurance.

27. A method for sensing sweat using a device capable of providing chronological assurance, the method comprising:

measuring at least one measurement of sweat using a device comprising one or more sweat sensors;

determining a sweat sampling rate; and

determining a chronological assurance, wherein the chronological assurance is determined at least in part by the sweat sampling rate.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

recording the chronological assurance.

29. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

reporting the chronological assurance.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the device further comprises an indicator that reports the chronological assurance.

31. The method of claim 27, wherein the sweat sampling rate is determined at least in part from entering data into the device.

32. The method of claim 27, wherein the sweat sampling rate is determined at least in part from predetermined values for at least one of solute transport, diffusion, and sample contamination.

33. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

determining a sweat volume;

wherein the sweat sampling rate is at least in part determined by the sweat volume.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the device further comprises at least one impedance sensor, the sweat is generated at least in part from skin, and the sweat volume is determined by measuring the electrical impedance between the at least one impedance sensing electrode and the skin.

35. The method of claim 33, wherein the device further comprises at least two impedance sensing electrodes and the sweat volume is determined by measuring the electrical impedance between the at least two impedance sensing electrodes and measuring at least one concentration of ions in the sweat.

36. The method of claim 33, wherein the device further comprises at least one impedance sensor and determining the sweat volume includes at least in part measuring the electrical impedance when the device is in a state void of sweat.

37. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

determining a sweat generation rate;

wherein the sweat sampling rate is at least in part determined by the sweat generation rate.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein the sweat generation rate is determined using a plurality of measurements indicative of sweat generation rate.

39. The method of claim 37, wherein the device further comprises at least one impedance sensor and determining the sweat generation rate includes at least in part measuring the electrical impedance.

40. The method of claim 37, wherein the sweat generation rate is at least in part determined by a determination of the number of sweat glands from which sweat is being sampled.

41. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

calculating a sweat sampling interval at least in part from the determined sweat generation rate;

wherein the chronological assurance is determined at least in part by the sweat sampling interval.

42. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

calculating a sweat sampling interval;

wherein the device further comprises an evaporative pump that wicks sweat from the skin and the sweat sampling interval is calculated at least in part from determined values of the ability of the evaporative pump to wick sweat from the skin.

43. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

actively controlling the sweat sampling rate.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein the sweat sampling rate is actively controlled over time producing at least two different sweat sampling rates.

45. The method of claim 43, wherein the sweat sampling rate is actively controlled at least in part by an external input.

46. The method of claim 43, wherein the device has a plurality of subcomponents and the active control of the sweat sampling rate is enabled individually for the plurality of subcomponents.

47. The method of claim 43, wherein the sweat sampling rate is actively controlled by at least one measurement of sweat or physiological condition.

48. The method of claim 43, wherein the active control of the sweat sampling rate includes at least one electrode which controls the generation rate of solutes as mediated by electric field.

49. The method of claim 43, further comprising:

actively controlling the sweat generation rate;

wherein the sweat sampling rate is actively controlled by one or more means of active control of the sweat generation rate.

50. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

actively controlling the sweat generation rate.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the sweat generation rate is actively controlled over time to provide a plurality of sweat generation rates.

52. The method of claim 50, wherein the sweat generation rate is actively controlled to decrease the sweat generation rate.

53. The method of claim 50, wherein the sweat generation rate is actively controlled by feedback from a plurality of sensors.

54. The method of claim 27, wherein the device further comprises at least two sensors, where the at least two sensors form at least two subcomponents of the device and the subcomponents have individual sweat sampling rates and chronological assurances, and the sweat sampling rate and chronological assurance are determined individually for each of the at least two subcomponents.

55. A method for sensing sweat from at least two users using devices capable of providing chronological assurance, the method comprising:

attaching at least two devices comprising a sensor to at least two users;

measuring at least one measurement of sweat using the at least two devices;

determining a sweat sampling rate for each of the at least two devices;

determining a chronological assurance for each of the at least two devices, wherein the chronological assurance is determined at least in part by the sweat sampling rate; and

comparing the chronological assurance for each of the at least two devices.
