1. A surgical end effector, comprising:
- a drive system, comprising;
a proximal assembly comprising a first translatable element, wherein a first aperture is defined in the first translatable element; and
a distal assembly comprising a second translatable element, wherein the second translatable element is releasably coupled to the first translatable element, and wherein a second aperture is defined in the second translatable element;
a pin removably positioned in the first aperture and the second aperture; and
a housing, wherein the drive system is positioned within the housing, wherein the pin is accessible from outside of the housing, wherein the proximal assembly is configured to receive a drive motion from a motor, and wherein the pin is configured to transfer the drive motion from the proximal assembly to the distal assembly when the pin is positioned in the first aperture and the second aperture.

a motor; an end effector, comprising; a first jaw; and a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position to clamp the tissue between said first jaw and said second jaw; a closure drive operably engaged with said motor and said second jaw, wherein said closure drive comprises a translatable closure member configurable to transmit a closing motion between said motor and said second jaw, wherein said translatable closure member comprises; a first portion; a second portion; and a releasable connection member, wherein said releasable connection member operably connects said first portion to said second portion when said releasable connection member is in an unreleased configuration such that the translatable closure member can transmit said closing motion to said second jaw, and wherein said second portion is extendable relative to said first portion to move said second jaw away from said first jaw to unclamp the tissue captured within said end effector when said releasable connection member is in a released configuration; and a housing, configured to house the closure drive, wherein the releasable connection member is accessible from outside of the housing. - View Dependent Claims (18)

19. A surgical instrument for treating tissue, comprising:

a motor; an end effector, comprising; a first jaw; and a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position to clamp the tissue between said first jaw and said second jaw; a closure drive operably engaged with said motor and said second jaw, wherein said closure drive comprises a translatable closure member configurable to transmit a closing motion between said motor and said second jaw, wherein said translatable closure member comprises; a first portion; a second portion; and a releasable connection member, wherein said releasable connection member operably connects said first portion to said second portion when said releasable connection member is in an unreleased configuration such that the translatable closure member can transmit said closing motion to said second jaw, and wherein said second portion is extendable relative to said first portion to move said second jaw away from said first jaw to unclamp the tissue captured within said end effector when said releasable connection member is in a released configuration, wherein said releasable connection member comprises a pin, wherein said pin comprises a lock portion engaged with said first portion and said second portion of said translatable closure member when said releasable connection member is in said unreleased configuration, and wherein said pin further comprises a graspable portion which can be grasped by a user of said surgical instrument to disengage said pin from said translatable closure member to place said releasable connection member in said released configuration.
