1. A catheter for use in a medical procedure, the catheter comprising:
- an elongate member defining a longitudinal axis; and
a sealing member supported by the elongate member, the sealing member including a frame comprising an interior side facing towards the elongate member and an exterior side facing away from the elongate member, and a membrane positioned on the interior side of the frame, wherein the membrane is fixed to the elongate member and extends continuously around an outer perimeter of the elongate member in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis, the sealing member being repositionable, while the membrane is fixed to the elongate member, between a first position, wherein a portion of the membrane is separated from the interior side of the frame to permit fluid flow through the sealing member, and a second position, wherein the membrane sealingly engages the interior side of the frame to prevent fluid flow through the sealing member.

Abstract
A device, method, and system of deploying an embolic protection device at a location distal to a treatment site in a vessel of a patient. A delivery catheter is encircled by a sealing member which is expandable from a delivery configuration to a deployed configuration. The device creates a seal to prevent the flow of blood during the treatment of vascular disease. A distal protection element is delivered by the delivery catheter and deployed to filter or remove embolic debris.

10. A system for occluding fluid flow in a lumen, the system comprising:
a delivery catheter including an elongate member, and a sealing member supported by the elongate member, the sealing member including a frame comprising an interior side facing towards the elongate member and an exterior side facing away from the elongate member, and a membrane positioned on the interior side of the frame, the membrane being biased to self-expand and comprising a proximal end fixed to the elongate member and a distal end defining an opening, wherein the elongate member extends from the proximal end of the membrane through the opening defined by the distal end of the membrane, the sealing member being repositionable, while the proximal end of the membrane is fixed to the elongate member, between a first position, wherein a portion of the membrane is separated from the interior side of the frame to permit fluid flow through the sealing member, and a second position, wherein the membrane sealingly engages the interior side of the frame to prevent fluid flow through the sealing member, the sealing member being biased towards the second position. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

17. A method of occluding fluid flow within a lumen during a surgical procedure, the method comprising:
-
inserting a guide catheter into the lumen; moving a delivery catheter through the guide catheter such that a sealing member of the delivery catheter is positioned externally of the guide catheter, the delivery catheter comprising an elongate member defining a longitudinal axis and the sealing member supported by the elongate member, the sealing member including a frame comprising an interior side facing towards the elongate member and an exterior side facing away from the elongate member; and deploying the sealing member such that the frame of the sealing member engages an inner wall of the lumen, and a fluid-impervious membrane of the sealing member is moved into sealing engagement with the frame to prevent fluid flow through the sealing member, wherein at least a portion of the fluid-impervious membrane is positioned on the interior side of the frame, wherein the fluid-impervious membrane is fixed to the elongate member when the fluid-impervious membrane is moved into sealing engagement with the frame, and wherein the fluid-impervious membrane extends continuously around an outer perimeter of the elongate member in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis wherein deploying the sealing member includes repositioning the sealing member from a first position, wherein a portion of the membrane is separated from the frame to permit fluid flow though the sealing member, and a second position, wherein the membrane sealingly engages the interior side of the frame.
