Abstract

Systems and methods related to the field of cardiac resuscitation, and in particular to devices for assisting rescuers in performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Claims

1. An external defibrillator comprising:

a capacitor configured to be electrically connected to an electrical energy storage source and capable of delivering a defibrillating shock to a patient;

circuitry for detection of chest compressions delivered to the patient; and

a controller programmed to;

analyze one or more ECG signals from the patient during delivery of chest compressions to the patient;

determine a desirability of a shock to the patient based on the analysis of the one or more ECG signals during the delivery of chest compressions of a CPR cycle;

determine that chest compressions of the CPR cycle have been completed based on a signal from the circuitry for detection of chest compressions delivered to the patient;

after chest compressions of the CPR cycle have been completed, analyze one or more ECG signals to reconfirm the desirability of the shock to the patient based on an analysis of the one or more ECG signals acquired in an absence of chest compressions; and

control the capacitor to deliver the shock to the patient based at least in part on the reconfirmation of the desirability of providing the shock to the patient.

The external defibrillator of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to determine when a rescuer has completed the chest compressions of the CPR cycle based on a signal from the circuitry for detection of chest compressions delivered to the patient and to analyze the one or more ECG signals to reconfirm the desirability of the shock to the patient immediately after the rescuer ceases the chest compressions of the CPR cycle.

The external defibrillator device of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to determine when a rescuer ceases the chest compressions of the CPR cycle based on a signal from the circuitry for detection of chest compressions delivered to the patient and to analyze the one or more ECG signals to reconfirm the desirability of the shock to the patient within about 5 seconds after the rescuer ceases the chest compressions of the CPR cycle.

4. The external defibrillator of claim 2, wherein the controller is programmed to instruct the rescuer to cease chest compressions once the CPR cycle has been completed.

5. The external defibrillator of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to charge the capacitor during delivery of the chest compressions of the CPR cycle to the patient.

6. The external defibrillator of claim 5, wherein the controller is programmed to analyze the one or more ECG signals to reconfirm the desirability of the shock to the patient immediately once the capacitor is fully charged.

7. The external defibrillator of claim 5, wherein the controller is programmed to analyze the one or more ECG signals to reconfirm the desirability of the shock to the patient within 5 seconds after the capacitor is fully charged.

8. The external defibrillator of claim 1, further comprising one or more safety interlocks to prevent accidental discharge of the capacitor during charging of the capacitor.

The external defibrillator of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to, based on the analysis of the one or more ECG signals, determine whether to charge the capacitor or to instruct the rescuer to continue the chest compressions of the chest compression cycle without charging the capacitor.

10. The external defibrillator of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to instruct the rescuer to resume chest compressions after the shock is delivered to the patient.

11. The external defibrillator of claim 1, further comprising electrode pads that are connected to the external defibrillator, the electrode pads comprising adhesive material for adhering to the patient and being arranged to deliver the shock from the capacitor to the patient.

12. The external defibrillator of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to cause the capacitor to dissipate a charge if the analysis of the one or more ECG signals does not reconfirm the desirability of providing the shock to the patient.

The external defibrillator device of claim 1, wherein determining the desirability of the shock to the patient during delivery of the chest compressions of the CPR cycle to the patient comprises determining a level of certainty of whether the shock is desirable, the level of certainty being one of at least a low level of certainty and a high level of certainty.

14. The external defibrillator of claim 13, wherein the controller is programmed to provide the shock immediately following the completion of the chest compressions of the CPR cycle when the level of certainty is a high level of certainty.

15. The external defibrillator device of claim 13, wherein the controller is programmed to reconfirm the desirability of the shock to the patient immediately following the completion of the chest compressions of the CPR cycle if the level of certainty is a low level of certainty.

16. The external defibrillator device of claim 1, wherein a duration of the CPR cycle is preset in the controller.

17. The external defibrillator device of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to provide an indication to a rescuer that the CPR cycle is completed.

18. The external defibrillator device of claim 1, wherein a duration of the CPR cycle is variable based on analysis of the one or more ECG signals by the controller.

19. An external defibrillator comprising:

a capacitor configured to be electrically connected to an electrical energy storage source and capable of delivering a defibrillating shock to a patient;

circuitry for detection of chest compressions delivered to the patient; and

a controller programmed to;

charge the capacitor during delivery of chest compressions to the patient;

analyze one or more electrocardiogram (ECG) signals from the patient during delivery of chest compressions to the patient;

determine the desirability of a shock to the patient based on the analysis of the one or more ECG signals during the delivery of chest compressions of a CPR cycle;

determine when the rescuer has completed the chest compressions of the CPR cycle based on a signal from the circuitry for detection of chest compressions delivered to the patient;

analyze one or more ECG signals immediately after the rescuer has completed the chest compressions of the CPR cycle to reconfirm the desirability of the shock to the patient; and

control the capacitor to deliver the shock to the patient based at least in part on the reconfirmation of the desirability of providing the shock to the patient.

20. The external defibrillator of claim 19, wherein the controller is programmed to instruct the rescuer to initiate another CPR cycle after the shock has been delivered to the patient.

21. A method for providing electrical therapy to a patient, the method comprising:

analyzing one or more electrocardiogram (ECG) signals from a patient during delivery of chest compressions of a CPR cycle to the patient;

determining the desirability of a shock to the patient based on the analysis of the one or more ECG signals during the delivery of the chest compressions;

determining that chest compressions of the CPR cycle have been completed based on a signal from circuitry for detection of chest compressions delivered to the patient;

after the chest compressions of the CPR cycle have been completed, analyzing one or more ECG signals to reconfirm the desirability of the shock to the patient; and

providing a defibrillating shock from a defibrillating device to the patient based at least in part on the reconfirmation of the desirability of the shock.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising charging the defibrillating device during delivery of the chest compressions of the CPR cycle to the patient and prior to analyzing the one or more ECG signals to reconfirm the desirability of the shock to the patient.

23. The method of claim 21, further comprising setting a duration of the CPR cycle.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the duration of the CPR cycle is preset.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the duration of the CPR cycle is variable based on analysis of the one or more ECG signals.

26. The method of claim 21, further comprising providing an indication to a rescuer that the CPR cycle is completed.
