Abstract

A device for clearing obstructions from a medical tube, such as a chest tube, is disclosed in various embodiments. The device features a clearance member in the form of a loop. The loop desirably has a diameter that substantially corresponds to the inner diameter of the medical tube. Also desirably, the loop presents a substantially unobstructed pathway therethrough for the flow of material from a location in the medical tube distal to the loop to a location in the medical tube proximal to the loop regardless whether the clearance member is being translated or is at rest in the medical tube. Methods of utilizing such a device are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A medical-tube assembly comprising a medical tube, a clearance device adapted to couple with and dislodge debris accumulated within said medical tube, and a CO₂ sensor provided in fluid communication with said medical tube to sense the presence of CO₂ levels in said medical tube, wherein the medical tube at least partially defines a passageway comprising a sterile field for the passage of patient secretions from said medical tube out a proximal end of said passageway, wherein the clearance device comprises an elongate guide member disposed entirely within and extending in said passageway, said guide member being actuable from outside said medical tube without compromising said sterile field to correspondingly actuate a clearance member attached to or formed with said guide member in said medical tube, said clearance member being configured such that it presents a substantially unobstructed pathway for a flow of material from a location in said medical tube distal to said clearance member to a location in said medical tube proximal to said clearance member regardless whether said clearance member is being actuated or is at rest within said medical tube.

2. The medical-tube assembly of claim 1, wherein the CO₂ sensor is placed between the medical tube and a suction source.

3. The medical-tube assembly of claim 1, wherein the CO₂ sensor is coupled to the medical tube via a lateral channel in fluid communication with and extending from the medical tube.

The medical-tube assembly of claim 1, further comprising a guide tube coupled to a proximal end of said medical tube, said elongate guide member being at least partially disposed in and translatable through said guide tube, said elongate guide member being magnetically actuable from outside of said guide tube through a wall of said guide tube.

The medical-tube assembly of claim 4, further comprising a shuttle member disposed outside the guide tube and adapted to translate along a length thereof, said elongate guide member being magnetically coupled to said shuttle member such that translation of said shuttle member induces a corresponding translation of said clearance member attached to or formed with said guide member in said medical tube.

6. The medical-tube assembly of claim 1, wherein the clearance member is in the form of a loop adapted to be translated through said medical tube via the guide wire to dislodge debris accumulated therein.

7. The medical-tube assembly of claim 6, said loop being dimensioned to substantially correspond to the passageway of said medical tube.

8. The medical-tube assembly of claim 1, wherein the medical tube is a surgical drain tube.

9. A method of treating a patient, comprising:

implanting the medical-tube assembly of claim 1 in a patient'"'"'s body cavity;

draining fluid from the patient'"'"'s body cavity through said tube;

actuating said clearance device within the medical tube to dislodge debris accumulated therein; and

detecting CO₂ within the medical tube.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the presence of elevated CO₂ levels in the medical tube is correlated to the presence of a puncture in a lung of the patient.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein a CO₂ sensor is placed between the medical tube and a suction source.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein a CO₂ sensor is coupled to the medical tube via a lateral channel in fluid communication with and extending from the medical tube.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein the detection of CO₂ in the medical tube does not compromise the sterile field in said medical tube.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein a sensing transducer or CO₂-sensitive litmus paper detects CO₂ within the medical tube.
