1. A method comprising:

  • determining a transmission mode of a transmitting device for transmitting a long training field (LTF) sequence for High Efficiency (HE) wireless local area network (WLAN) communication, wherein the transmission mode comprises an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) mode;

    based on the transmission mode, constructing a plurality of candidate training sequences for the LTF sequence for the HE WLAN communication, wherein each candidate sequence includes a first number of base sequences and a second number of floating sequences, wherein the base sequences reuse an LTF sequence for Very High Throughput (VHT) WLAN communication, and wherein constructing the plurality of candidate training sequences includes constructing the plurality of candidate training sequences by varying values and locations of the second number of floating sequences;

    selecting a target training sequence, from the plurality of candidate training sequences for the LTF sequence for the HE WLAN communication, that has a desired peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) value;

    in response to determining that the transmission mode is an OFDMA mode, masking the target training sequence by muting specified tones of the target training sequence; and

    assigning the masked target training sequence to the transmitting device for transmitting the masked target training sequence in the LTF for the HE WLAN communication.
