1. A manual tissue microfracture apparatus, comprising:
- a housing having a proximal end and a distal end including an aperture, the housing having a length between 4 inches and 18 inches;
an elongated member having a proximal end and a distal end with at least one tissue microfracture spike coupled in fixed relation to the distal end of the elongated member, the at least one tissue microfracture spike configured to penetrate a bone surface in a bone microfracture procedure, the elongated member configured to be moved relative to the housing to expose a portion of the at least one tissue microfracture spike through the aperture from a home position at which;
the at least one tissue microfracture spike is within the housing; and
the proximal end of the elongated member extends out of the proximal end of the housing; and
a disposing facility positioned between the elongated member and the housing, the disposing facility configured to dispose the at least one tissue microfracture spike to the home position within the housing after the portion of the at least one tissue microfracture spike is exposed through the aperture;
wherein a surface of the elongated member is configured to contact a surface of the housing during exposure of the at least one tissue microfracture spike to limit the distance by which the portion of the at least one tissue microfracture spike can be exposed to between 1 and 4 millimeters (mm);
wherein the disposing facility is positioned between the aperture and the surface of the housing; and
wherein the position of the surface of the elongated member is non-adjustably fixed relative to the distal end of the elongated member, and the position of the surface of the housing is non-adjustably fixed relative to the distal end of the housing.

Abstract
A tissue microfracture apparatus including a housing having a proximal end and a distal end that includes an aperture. The apparatus also includes an elongated member having proximal and distal ends with at least one tissue microfracture spike protruding from the distal end. The member operates cooperatively with the housing to expose a portion of the spike through the aperture. The apparatus also includes a disposing facility between the elongated member and the housing to dispose the spike in a home position within the housing. The disposing facility may be a spring element positioned at either the proximal or distal end of the housing. The elongated member may include a force receiving surface on the proximal end for receiving a force that facilitates exposing the portion of the spike. An exposure limiting facility limits the exposed portion of the spike.

7. A method of tissue microfracture, comprising:

providing a manual force from a surgical mallet; receiving the manual force on a force-receiving surface of a tissue microfracture apparatus, thereby causing a portion of a single spike to protrude through an aperture in an operative end of the tissue microfracture apparatus by a distance of between 1 and 4 millimeters (mm) and into a bone of a patient; and retracting the portion of the single spike through the aperture; wherein the tissue microfracture apparatus comprises; a housing having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end including an aperture; and an elongated member having a proximal end and a distal end with the single spike coupled in fixed relation to the distal end of the elongated member, the elongated member configured to be moved relative to the housing to expose the portion of the single spike through the aperture from a home position at which; the single spike is within the housing; and the proximal end of the elongated member extends out of the proximal end of the housing; wherein a surface of the elongated member is configured to contact a surface of the housing to limit the distance by which the portion of the single spike can protrude through the aperture to between 1 and 4 millimeters (mm); and wherein the position of the surface of the elongated member is fixed relative to the distal end of the elongated member, and the position of the surface of the housing is fixed relative to the distal end of the housing. - View Dependent Claims (8)

9. A manual tissue microfracture apparatus, comprising:

a housing having a proximal end and a distal end including an aperture, the housing having a length between 4 inches and 18 inches; and an elongated member having a proximal end and a distal end with a tissue microfracture spike configured to penetrate a bone surface, the tissue microfracture spike coupled in fixed relation to the distal end of the elongated member, the elongated member configured to be moved relative to the housing to expose a portion of the tissue microfracture spike through the aperture from a home position at which; the tissue microfracture spike is within the housing; and the proximal end of the elongated member extends out of the proximal end of the housing; wherein a first surface of the elongated member is configured to contact a surface of the housing during exposure of the tissue microfracture spike to limit the distance by which the portion of the tissue microfracture spike can be exposed to between 1 and 4 millimeters (mm); wherein the first surface of the elongated member is spaced apart from the distal end of the elongated member or is positioned at the proximal end of the elongated member; wherein a portion of the elongated member that is nearer to the distal end of the elongated member than the proximal end of the elongated member comprises a second surface that is distinct from the first surface of the elongated member, the second surface extending radially outward relative to a peripheral surface of the tissue microfracture spike; and wherein the position of the first surface of the elongated member is fixed relative to the distal end of the elongated member, and the position of the surface of the housing is fixed relative to the distal end of the housing. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12)

13. A method of tissue microfracture, comprising:

providing a manual force from a surgical mallet; receiving the manual force on a force-receiving surface of a tissue microfracture apparatus, thereby causing a portion of a single spike to protrude through an aperture in an operative end of the tissue microfracture apparatus into a bone of a patient; and retracting the portion of the single spike through the aperture; wherein the tissue microfracture apparatus comprises; a housing having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end including the aperture; and an elongated member having a proximal end and a distal end with the single spike coupled in fixed relation to the distal end of the elongated member, the elongated member configured to be moved relative to the housing to expose the portion of the single spike through the aperture from a home position at which; the single spike is within the housing; and the proximal end of the elongated member extends out of the proximal end of the housing; and wherein a surface of the elongated member is configured to contact a surface of the housing to limit the distance by which the portion of the single spike can protrude through the aperture, the position of the surface of the elongated member is fixed relative to the distal end of the elongated member, and the position of the surface of the housing is fixed relative to the distal end of the housing. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16, 17, 18)

19. A method of tissue microfracture, the method comprising:

providing a manual force from a surgical mallet to a tissue microfracture apparatus, wherein the tissue microfracture apparatus comprises; a housing having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end including an aperture; and an elongated member having a proximal end and a distal end with a single spike coupled in fixed relation to the distal end of the elongated member; receiving the manual force on a force-receiving surface at the proximal end of the elongated member when the elongated member is at a home position at which; the single spike is within the housing; and the proximal end of the elongated member extends out of the proximal end of the housing; responsive to receiving the manual force; moving the elongated member relative to the housing; protruding a portion of the single spike through the aperture and into a bone of a patient; and contacting a surface of the elongated member to a surface of the housing thereby limiting the distance by which the portion of the single spike protrudes through the aperture, the position of the surface of the elongated member fixed relative to the distal end of the elongated member, and the position of the surface of the housing is fixed relative to the distal end of the housing; and retracting the portion of the single spike through the aperture to the home position. - View Dependent Claims (20)
