Abstract

A method for controlling an electrosurgical electrode of a medical device includes providing an electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode having an arcuate electrode portion; delivering energy from an RF generator to the electrosurgical electrode, said RF generator including an RF amplifier; monitoring an electrical characteristic associated with said electrosurgical electrode; and establishing a desired RF power output and a desired RF duty cycle at said RF generator by adjusting DC input voltage applied to an output stage of said RF amplifier based on said monitoring to effect tissue cutting by the arcuate electrode portion.

Claims

1. A method for controlling an electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode of a medical device comprising:

providing the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode having an arcuate electrode portion;

delivering energy from an RF generator to the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode, the radiofrequency (RF) generator including an RF amplifier;

monitoring an electrical characteristic associated with the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode; and

establishing a desired RF power output and a desired RF duty cycle at the RF generator by adjusting DC input voltage applied to an output stage of the RF amplifier based on the monitoring to effect tissue cutting by the arcuate electrode portion.

2. The method as in claim 1, further comprising selecting the desired RF duty cycle.

3. The method as in claim 2, wherein the selecting comprises selecting one of a run RF duty cycle for a run mode and a start RF duty cycle for a start mode, the start mode preceding the run mode.

The method as in claim 1, wherein the establishing the desired RF power output and the desired RF duty cycle includes maintaining a constant duty cycle and adjusting at least one of RF output voltage and RF output current during a cutting mode during which the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode is cutting.

The method as in claim 1, further comprising automatically switching from a start mode to a run mode when the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode begins the tissue cutting and wherein the establishing the desired RF power output and the desired RF duty cycle takes place during both the start mode and the run mode and includes maintaining a lower RF power output in the run mode than in the start mode.

6. The method as in claim 5, further comprising maintaining a different duty cycle in the run mode than in the start mode.

7. The method as in claim 5, wherein the switching occurs responsive to an onset of plasma generation at the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode.

8. The method as in claim 5, wherein the switching occurs responsive to obtaining a predetermined DC voltage level across the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode and a return electrode.

9. A method for controlling an electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode of a medical device comprising:

delivering energy from an RF generator to the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode, the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode having a length including an arcuate electrode portion to establish an arcuate electrode contact area with tissue to cut the tissue in an arcuate path;

determining when the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode has started cutting the tissue; and

switching the energy from a start mode that provides a first RF power output and a first RF duty cycle, to a run mode having a second RF duty cycle and a second RF power output lower than the first RF power output and controlled by a control servo system, responsive to the determining.

10. The method as in claim 9, wherein the switching includes changing a cut speed of the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode.

11. The method as in claim 9, further comprising monitoring an electrical characteristic associated with the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode and wherein the monitoring and the determining comprise indirectly measuring an RF output voltage and an RF output current.

12. The method as in claim 9, wherein the first RF power output includes a power of about 1200 Watts.

13. The method as in claim 9, wherein the determining comprises detecting a DC voltage produced across said electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode and a return electrode.

14. A method for controlling an electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode, comprising:

a. providing an RF generator to generate an RF signal having RF energy, the RF generator having a start mode with a first RF duty cycle and a first RF power output and a cutting mode with a second RF duty cycle and a second RF power output lower than the first RF power output;

b. delivering the RF energy from the RF generator operating in the start mode to an electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode having an arcuate electrode portion;

c. filtering the RF signal, which represents the RF energy delivered to the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode, to provide a DC voltage;

d. monitoring the DC voltage;

e. switching the RF generator from the start mode to the cutting mode when the monitored DC voltage is detected to be at a level to form plasma on the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode;

f. delivering the RF energy to the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode with the RF generator in the cutting mode; and

g. moving the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode to cut the tissue when the RF generator is in the cutting mode.

15. The method of claim 14, comprising operating the RF generator in the start mode when the DC voltage is less than the level to form plasma on the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode.

16. The method of claim 15, comprising operating the electrosurgical generator in the cutting mode when the DC voltage is detected to be at or exceeds the level to form plasma on the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the plasma is generated when the DC voltage between the electrosurgical tissue cutting electrode and adjacent tissue exceeds a predetermined threshold level.

18. The method of claim 14 wherein the first RF duty cycle is 50 to 100%.

19. The method of claim 14 wherein the second RF duty cycle is 15 to 40%.
