1. A method of regulating pressure in a fluid infusion line, the fluid infusion line being connected to a patient, a source of medicant, and a pump, the method comprising:

  • detecting a fluid pressure change in a drip chamber of the fluid infusion line, the drip chamber coupled with and between the source of medicant and the pump, the drip chamber comprising a spike inlet, a drip forming orifice, and a check valve positioned above the drip forming orifice between the spike inlet and the drip forming orifice;

    inserting a syringe into a port of the fluid infusion line, wherein the port is positioned upstream of the pump;

    injecting fluid from the syringe into the fluid infusion line;

    measuring a fluid pressure at a location within the drip chamber between the check valve and the drip forming orifice;

    detecting that the measured fluid pressure exceeds a threshold, wherein the threshold represents a pressure required to cause a portion of the check valve to open to allow fluid to flow through the fluid infusion line; and

    if the fluid pressure downstream of the check valve in the drip chamber exceeds the threshold, the fluid pressure causing a portion of the check valve of the drip chamber to open so that the fluid flows in a backflow direction away from the patient in the fluid infusion line so as to relieve pressure in the fluid infusion line.
