Abstract

An improved system and method for address entry are provided for a user to enter a plurality of addresses into a recipient field of an electronic communication composition application. According to embodiments described herein, an auto-complete list is generated based on an input indicative of at least a portion of a current recipient address and is additionally based on a previously entered recipient address, and the auto-complete list is then displayed.

Claims

1. A method for address entry in an electronic communication composition application, the method comprising:

detecting a first user input indicative of a first recipient address for an electronic communication, wherein the first recipient address is a complete recipient address;

while the electronic communication is currently addressed to the first recipient address;

detecting, subsequent to detecting the first user input, a second user input in addition to the first recipient address, the second user input being indicative of a portion of a second recipient address for the electronic communication;

generating an auto-complete list comprised of candidate addresses that correspond to the second user input, wherein the generating is based on consideration of the first recipient address, and wherein the candidate addresses are individual candidate addresses that are selected for inclusion within the auto-complete list independent of each other;

determining the auto-complete list comprises the first recipient address as one of the candidate addresses;

designating a candidate address in the auto-complete list that is different from the first recipient address as a default candidate address in response to determining the auto-complete list comprises the first recipient address;

displaying the auto-complete list, wherein the candidate addresses are displayed as individually selectable candidate addresses within the auto-complete list; and

automatically highlighting the candidate address in the auto-complete list designated as the default candidate address.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the generating comprises ordering the candidate addresses in one of:

an alphabetical order;

a Most-Recently Used order;

or a Most-Frequently Used order.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the generating comprises excluding from the auto-complete list a candidate address that corresponds to the first recipient address.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the second user input is further indicative of the first recipient address.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the generating comprises positioning at the bottom of the auto-complete list a candidate address that corresponds to the first recipient address.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the generating comprises designating the candidate address in the auto-complete list that is different from the first recipient address as a default candidate address.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the default candidate address is immediately selectable from the auto-complete list.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the highlighted candidate address is below a first candidate address in the auto-complete list.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the detecting a first user input comprises receiving a finalization input.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving, subsequent to the displaying, a finalization input.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the receiving the finalization input comprises one of detecting an actuation, detecting a change of focus, and detecting a predetermined character.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the receiving the finalization input comprises:

detecting a selection of one of the candidate addresses from the auto-complete list.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising replacing, responsive to detecting the selection, the second user input with the selected candidate address.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the generating comprises searching at least one address information list and retrieving the candidate addresses from the at least one address information list.

15. An electronic computing device enabled for electronic communication, the device comprising:

a processor;

a memory, connected to the processor, for storing at least one address information list;

a display connected to the processor;

computer-readable instructions, stored in the memory and executable on the processor, for an electronic communications composition application, the application operable for;

detecting a first user input indicative of a first recipient address for an electronic communication, wherein the first recipient address is a complete recipient address;

while the electronic communication is currently addressed to the first recipient address;

detecting, subsequent to detecting the first user input, a second user input in addition to the first recipient addressed, the second user input being indicative of a portion of a second recipient address for the electronic communication;

generating an auto-complete list comprised of candidate addresses that correspond to the second user input, wherein the generating is based on consideration of the first recipient address and wherein the candidate addresses are individual candidate addresses that are selected for inclusion within the auto-complete list independent of each other;

determining the auto-complete list comprises the first recipient address as one of the candidate addresses;

designating a candidate address in the auto-complete list that is different from the first recipient address as a default candidate address in response to determining the auto-complete list comprises the first recipient address;

displaying the auto-complete list on the display, wherein the candidate addresses are displayed as individually selectable candidate addresses within the auto-complete list; and

automatically highlighting the candidate address in the auto-complete list designated as the default candidate address.

16. The electronic computing device according to claim 15, wherein the generating comprises ordering the candidate addresses in one of:

an alphabetical order;

a Most-Recently Used order;

or a Most-Frequently Used order.

17. The electronic computing device according to claim 15, wherein the second user input is further indicative of the first recipient address.

18. The electronic computing device according to claim 15, wherein the generating comprises positioning at the bottom of the auto-complete list a candidate address that corresponds to the first recipient address.

19. The electronic computing device according to claim 15, wherein the generating comprises designating the candidate address in the auto-complete list that is different from the first recipient address as a default candidate address.

20. The electronic computing device according to claim 19, wherein the default candidate address is immediately selectable from the auto-complete list.

21. The electronic computing device according to claim 15, wherein the highlighted candidate address is below a first candidate address in the auto-complete list.

22. The electronic computing device according to claim 15, wherein the detecting a first user input comprises receiving a finalization input.

23. The electronic computing device according to claim 15, further comprising receiving, subsequent to the displaying, a finalization input.

24. The electronic computing device according to claim 23, wherein the receiving the finalization input comprises one of detecting an actuation, detecting a change of focus, or detecting a predetermined character.

25. The electronic computing device according to claim 23, wherein the receiving the finalization input comprises:

detecting a selection of one of the candidate addresses from the auto-complete list.

26. The electronic computing device according to claim 25, further comprising replacing, responsive to detecting the selection, the second user input with the selected candidate address.

28. The electronic computing device according to claim 15, wherein the generating comprises searching at least one address information list and retrieving the candidate addresses from the at least one address information list.

27. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing computer-readable instructions for improved address entry, the computer-readable instructions comprising:

instructions for detecting a first user input indicative of a first recipient address for an electronic communication, wherein the first recipient address is a complete recipient address;

while the electronic communication is currently addressed to the first recipient address;

instructions for detecting, subsequent to detecting the first user input, a second user input in addition to the first recipient address, the second user input being indicative of a portion of a second recipient address for the electronic communication;

instructions for generating an auto-complete list comprised of candidate addresses that correspond to the second user input, wherein the generating is based on consideration of the first recipient address, and wherein the candidate addresses are individual candidate addresses that are selected for inclusion within the auto-complete list independent of each other;

instructions for determining the auto-complete list comprises the first recipient address as one of the candidate addresses;

instructions for designating a candidate address in the auto-complete list that is different from the first recipient address as a default candidate address in response to determining the auto-complete list comprises the first recipient address;

instructions for displaying the auto-complete list, wherein the candidate addresses are displayed as individually selectable candidate addresses within the auto-complete list; and

automatically highlighting the candidate address in the auto-complete list designated as the default candidate address.

29. The computer program product of claim 27, wherein the generating comprises ordering the candidate addresses in one of:

an alphabetical order;

a Most-Recently Used order;

or a Most-Frequently Used order.

30. The computer program product of claim 27, wherein the second user input is further indicative of the first recipient address.

31. The computer program product of claim 27, wherein the generating comprises positioning at the bottom of the auto-complete list a candidate address that corresponds to the first recipient address.

32. The computer program product of claim 27, wherein the default candidate address is immediately selectable from the auto-complete list.

33. The computer program product of claim 27, wherein the highlighted candidate address is below a first candidate address in the auto-complete list.

34. The computer program product of claim 27, wherein the detecting a first user input comprises receiving a finalization input.

35. The computer program product of claim 27, further comprising receiving, subsequent to the displaying, a finalization input.

36. The computer program product of claim 35, wherein the receiving the finalization input comprises one of detecting an actuation, detecting a change of focus, or detecting a predetermined character.

37. The computer program product of claim 35, wherein the receiving the finalization input comprises:

detecting a selection of one of the candidate addresses from the auto-complete list.

38. The computer program product of claim 37, further comprising replacing, responsive to detecting the selection, the second user input with the selected candidate address.

39. The computer program product of claim 27, wherein the generating comprises searching at least one address information list and retrieving the candidate addresses from the at least one address information list.
